Supreme Court rules selection of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners to be done by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, Leader Of Opposition and CJI

  • The Supreme Court today ruled that appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Elections Commissioners will be done by the President on the advice of a committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.
  • A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice K.M. Joseph said, this panel will be enforced until a law in this regard is made by Parliament. The bench was hearing a batch of petitions seeking reform in the process for the appointment of members of the Election Commission of India.
  • The top court emphasized that the Election Commission has to remain aloof from all forms of subjugation by the executive. The top court emphasised that the Election Commission is duty bound to act in a fair and legal manner and to abide by the provisions of the Constitution.

Italy PM GiorgiaMeloni accords the Guard of Honour at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan

  • Prime Minister of Italy GiorgiaMeloni was accorded the Guard of Honour at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi received GiorgiaMeloni in a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Earlier, after her arrival in New Delhi this morning, the Prime Minister of Italy paid her tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
  • GiorgiaMeloni is on a two-day visit to India. The External Affairs Ministry said that that was PM Meloni’s first visit to India and it would further strengthen and deepen the long-standing relationship between India and Italy. She will join the inaugural session as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker at the 8th Raisina Dialogue scheduled to start today.

SC set up a committee to examine the Hindenburg Research report issue on Adani Group companies, directs SEBI to investigate any manipulation of stock prices

  • The Supreme Court set up an expert committee today on the issue arising from the Hindenburg Research report on Adani Group companies. The committee will consist of six members, headed by former apex court judge Justice AM Sapre.
  • The Supreme Court said the committee shall submit its report in a sealed cover before the court in two months.
  • The Apex Court directed the Market regulator SEBI to ensure that all information is provided to the committee.
  • The Supreme Court also directed the SEBI to investigate whether there has been a violation of Section 19 of SEBI rules and whether there was any manipulation of stock prices.

India and Italy decide to have a strategic partnership

  • India and Italy have decided to turn their relationship into a strategic partnership. The decision was taken during the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart GiorgiaMeloni in New Delhi.
  • India and Italy are working closely in the direction of the fight against terrorism and separatism.
  • Both countries emphasise increasing cooperation in areas like Renewable Energy, Green Hydrogen, IT, semiconductors, telecom and space.

India, Uzbekistan joint military exercise progresses with full steam covering vast canvas of multi-domain operation

  • Ex DUSTLIK-2023, a Joint Exercise between India & Uzbekistan is progressing with full steam covering the vast canvas of multi-domain operation in a sub-conventional environment in Uttarakhand. The exercise being conducted at Foreign Training Node, Pithoragarh from 20 Feb 2023 and will conclude on the 5th of March 2023.
  • The Commanding Officer of the Indian contingent said that the varied terrain of Pithoragarh does provide an opportunity for both armies to rehearse and execute operational tasks as per the scope of the exercise. He said that both nations share a common goal to exterminate terrorism and bring peace to the world. He said, this 15 days exercise was primarily aimed at exchanging operational knowledge while enhancing interoperability between the armies of the two nations.
  • The contingent commander of the Indian Army elucidated that the Indian contingent took the opportunity to get acquainted with the operational procedures and drills of Uzbekistan Contingent and vice versa. To understand each other’s country, its geography, history, people-to-people ties and relationships in trade, economics, defence and other sectors, a country presentation was also conducted.

Philanthropist Bill Gates calls for scientific innovation to address climate change, calls on India to take the lead

  • Philanthropist Bill Gates has called for scientific innovations to address the problem of climate change and asked India to take the lead.
  • Bill Gates said that modern economies throughout the globe are based on energy intensity and over 80 per cent of this energy comes from burning hydrocarbons. He added, there is a need to create solutions that are not just cheap but also reliable.
  • While the global innovation boom is taking on the tough problems of climate change, the world is counting on India to play a central role. Gates said, innovation is needed from the whole world, but a lot specifically from India. He said, most of the emissions contributing to heating come from the rich countries and yet most of the damage will be in the middle-income and lower-income countries that are near the equator.
