Ramayana to be included in NCERT textbooks

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel has put forth recommendations advocating the inclusion of epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata in the school history curriculum, designating them under India's 'classical period.' Prof C I Issac, the committee's chairman, shared with ANI that the panel further proposed inscribing the Preamble of the Constitution in vernacular languages on classroom walls.

Formed to revise the social sciences curriculum for schools, the Social Science Committee of NCERT has outlined various suggestions in its final position paper on social sciences, a pivotal document guiding the creation of new NCERT textbooks. Among these proposals is the incorporation of the Indian knowledge system, including the Vedas and Ayurveda.

While awaiting final approval from NCERT, the committee has recommended categorizing history into four periods: the classical period, the medieval period, the British era, and modern India. This departure from the traditional three-fold classification—ancient, medieval, and modern India—reflects the committee's emphasis on a more nuanced historical understanding.

Prof Issac, a retired history professor, elaborated on the recommendations for the classical period, emphasizing the teaching of Indian epics and the importance of students gaining insights into figures like Rama from the Ramayana. The panel also advocated for a comprehensive exploration of India's diverse dynasties and suggested that textbooks highlight victories and notable figures such as Subhash Chandra Bose to instill confidence in students.

Additionally, the committee proposed the inscription of the Preamble on classroom walls in vernacular languages and suggested replacing the term 'India' with 'Bharat' in textbooks. These proposals, if implemented, aim to provide students with a more inclusive and holistic understanding of India's rich history and cultural heritage.
