The Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession, which deals with movement disorders of the body arising from certain conditions or illnesses. Treatment through physiotherapy can also be more efficient and cheap than other traditional medication or therapy. One of the main advantages of Physiotherapy is it has less or no side effect as compared to other systems of treatment. Because of its less side effects Physiotherapy has become popular among the intellectual people of our society.

Usually, the person who performs physiotherapy profession is called a Physiotherapist/ Physical therapist. Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat people whose movement is restricted by injury, illness or age. Individuals in the physiotherapy career study their patient's history and physical condition in dealing with the movement disorders. They use a range of treatments including exercises, manipulation, massage, different electrotherapy modalities e.g. ultrasound, electrical stimulation and deep heat.

Physiotherapists treat a wide range of different people with a variety of needs. Patients may be of sports injury, amputees, stroke patients, children with severe disabilities, pre- or post-operative patients or those with psychiatric problems. Sports injuries have been increasing day by day in sports loving country like India, so Sports Physiotherapists are in great demand. They apply some special techniques like sports taping, stretching to prevent and to correct these injuries. Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) are getting good results from Physiotherapy treatment. Exercises may be devised and taught to develop balance, maintain/ improve range of motion of joints, strengthen weak muscles or help patients to relax. Hydrotherapy is particularly useful as the water takes the weight off limbs and the heat soothes pains and relaxes muscles. Hydrotherapy is of great helpful for arthritis patients. Physiotherapists may also select appropriate appliances such as crutches, walking aids, braces, splints or wheelchairs and teach patients how to use them. Patients gain more benefits with these aids.

A Physiotherapist should have personal qualities like tolerance, compassion, ability to work independently or in a team, excellent time management skills, interest in people, good communication skills, patience and empathy, physical fitness and good general health, problem solving skills, responsible and mature attitude towards the needs of patients.

Qualifications:
Anyone seeking admission in Physiotherapy course should have keen interest in biological sciences as well as willingness to serve humanity. Candidates who have completed 17 years of age and passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English are eligible to apply for Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) course. Eligibility for Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) course is 50 % marks in BPT with completion of six months internship. Study of Masters Course is related with research work, so one should have interest in such dedicated work.

Courses to study:
In India, several kinds of courses are available with different durations e.g. Diploma in Physiotherapy(DPT) of two & half years, Bachelor of Physiotherapy(BPT) of four & half years, Master of Physiotherapy(MPT) of two/three years as well as PhD in Physiotherapy of three years duration.

The Bachelor degree program in Physiotherapy includes some major subjects like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medicine, orthopedics, neurology, pathology, psychology, biomechanics, exercise therapy and electrotherapy. Physiotherapy education is given through classroom lectures, hands-on learning, practical classes, and laboratory work. Usually, students are given a minimum requirement of clinical hours for the program. The requirements for studying physiotherapy will depend on the legal requirements for practicing physiotherapy in every country. There are some countries, which require a bachelor's degree before getting into a physiotherapy program. In some countries, it is also required that they pass a national licensing examination before practicing physiotherapy.

In India, universities offer undergraduate program of physiotherapy with four years of academic and clinical program and 6 months of compulsory internship. There are over 300 colleges offering undergraduate program in physiotherapy (BPT) and more than 50 colleges offering Masters in Physiotherapy (MPT) with 2 years duration. PhD in Physiotherapy is offered in some universities of the states Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Career Scope:
In India, physiotherapy is a flourishing career option. There are ample employment opportunities for the physiotherapists in government and private sectors.

There are numerous clinics, hospitals, health departments, private nursing homes and rehabilitation centers in India where the physiotherapists are employed. They can get self employment by starting private practice. The physiotherapists can opt for research and development works in the pharmaceutical companies and institutional laboratories. They can also select the teaching option. They are employed in the schools for mentally retarded and physically disabled children, defense medical establishments and rehabilitation centers for the handicapped.The physiotherapists can get excellent jobs in countries like USA, Australia and Canada.
