PAST PERFECT TENSE
మనం Present Perfect Tense గురించి చర్చించేటప్పుడు, అది Simple Past and Simple Presentల కలరుుక అని చెప్పుకొన్నాం. అయితే Past perfect tenseను Simple Past నుంచి ఇంకొంచెం వెనక్కి వెళ్లే సందర్భాల్లో ఉపయోగిస్తాం. అంటే ఒక past action నుంచి ఇంకొక past actionకు ప్రయాణం చేసినప్పుడు ఈ tense వాడతాం. This tense helps to move from one past action to yet another past action. In other words, when we talk of two past actions, the earlier of the two actions (ముందు జరిగిన క్రియను Past Perfectలో చెప్తాం) is used in the Past Perfect Tense and the other in Simple Past. రెండో క్రియను Simple Pastలో చెప్తాం.
E.g. By the time they reached² the cinema house, the tickets had been sold1 out.
They had checked1 the lock, before they left².
When I reached² home, the children had already slept1.
(Action1 is in Past Perfect and Action² is in Simple Past అని గుర్తు పెట్టుకుంటే చాలు.)
In this tense we can also talk about an action which began at some point in the past and continued to yet another point in the past.
E.g. Yester years' heroine Jamuna still uses foundation mask when she is in public,; after all, she had been in the movies for about 40 years.
In Reported Speech Simple Past changes to Past Perfect tense.
E.g. He told us that he had bought a car. చాలా మంది, 'He bought a car.' అని రాస్తారు. The committee noted that he had not obtained permission from his present employer.
Use either Simple Past or Past Perfect Tense for the verbs given after the blanks.
1. By the time we ____ (reach) the railway station, the train ____ (leave).
2. When ____ you ____(realize) that you ____ (make) a mistake?
3. ____ you ____ (check) if the servant ____ (clean) the house thoroughly?
4. Mohini ____ (deposit) some money before she ____ (join) the college mess.
5. They ____ (put) good manure before they ____(plant) the saplings.
6. He ____ (check) the address before he ____(post) the letter.
7. Unlike several families in India they ____ (not match) the horoscopes before they ____ (fix) the alliance.
8. It ____ (realize) that nobody ____ (check) the consignment before despatch.
9. The students ____(tell) the teacher that they ____(not understand) the problem even after explaining once again.
10. The killer ____ (put on) gloves before he ____ (take) out the dagger.
