Eligibility: Final year undergraduate and postgraduate students across India.

Certification: Successful completion, participants candidates will be awarded a certificate.

Course Highlights: Participants will explore the significance of the Himalayan cryosphere, with an emphasis on the effects of climate change on glaciers, snow cover, and river basins.

Key topics include:

  • Glacier hazards and dynamics
  • Glacial lake dynamics
  • Permafrost melting and landform changes
  • Snow cover dynamics and debris flow risks

The course also addresses the formation of new glacial lakes, which could lead to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), and the growing concern of permafrost melting.

Free Skill Development Training in Computer hardware and software

Course Structure: The course will be delivered online through ISRO's e-class platform and will consist of four main sessions:

Lecture Topic

Time (Hrs)

Overview of Geological Hazards

11:00 - 11:30

Cryosphere Dynamics in the Context of Climate Change

11:35 - 12:20

High Mountain Hazards in the Himalayas: Focus on Debris Flow

14:15 - 15:00

Remote Sensing Applications for Cryospheric Hazards (

15:05 - 15:50

Students can participate using a desktop, laptop, or any suitable device with internet connectivity, a camera, microphone, and speakers.

Registration and Certification Process: Students can register individually or via their respective nodal centres. Individual registrations are automatically approved, while those through nodal centres require coordinator approval. To earn a certificate, participants must attend at least 70% of each session. Certificates will be available for download from the ISRO Learning Management System (LMS).

Career Implications: This workshop aims to deepen students' knowledge of Himalayan cryospheric hazards. By examining the impacts of glacier and snowmelt, the course encourages early-career researchers and students to explore new research opportunities and potential career paths in climate science and space exploration.
