Rejected Rs. 6 Lakh Job Offer to pursue M.Tech.: Navyasri (GATE 2013 All India 6th ranker in Civil Engineering)

"Higher Education is the only way to grow up in the career" is what my parents always say. Left the job offer with Rs. 6 lakh package to work hard GATE exam and stood 6th place in the Civil Engineering..Varri Navyasri with sakshieducation...
Achievements:

EAMCET(2008): 134 rank
AIEEE (2008): 2000 rank
IIIT Hyderabad(2012): 8.35 CGPA

B.Tech. at NIT Warangal:
I was brought up in Hyderabad. My father worked as Assistant Manager in HCL and later went into construction business. My mother runs a private school. I completed B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from NIT Warangal with 8.35 CGPA.

Choosing GATE:
I had no clarity on my future till B.Tech. fourth year. As my parents always tell me that the higher education is the only path to grow high in career, I took up GATE seriously. I was very happy getting 6th rank in the exam. I rejected Rs. 6 lakh job offered by Capillary Technologies in the campus placements for preparing the GATE exam. The messages sent by my friends telling about their first salary, cadre and their enjoyment in the companies worried me, but my parents supported me in my endeavour.

Choosing Civil Engineering:
It is very rare for a girl to take Civil Engineering. I am aversed to the software job and like the core jobs. So while searching for the core branch, incidentally my father has been into construction industry during this time, I took Civil Engineering in NIT Warangal.

Preparation strategy:
I have prepared combining theory and practicals. As I got good grip on the subject, I was able to grasp the concepts of the GATE syllabus easily. For theory part, I followed academic books, previous questions and practiced the bits given at the end of the chapter. Along with the classroom coaching, I studied four hours daily.

My first preference is Transportation:
My preferences in M.Tech are Structures and Transportation specializations. My first option is Transportation because of the relevance it got due to the problems our society is facing on transportation. While choosing institutes, I prefer IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay.

Future Goal:
My future goal is to crack the Engineering Services Exam and I am going to give my first attempt in comnig June. Through this exam we can get into the position, which would enable us to serve the society. The alternative option I have is to start my own construction company.

Advice to the students:
According to me, GATE is a grand annual test for the four year Engineering course. So GATE is an easy go with command over the conceptual knowledge in the Engineering course. Covering all the syllabus of the GATE and having application oriented approach in the studies can make one champion of the GATE exam. The students who target GATE, start preparing from the third year, as the competition increases year on year and the students have to set their preparation stratedy accordingly.
