Every year in B.Tech is crucial: Prathima (holder of 58 lakhs job offer in campus placement at BITS)

Background:
I am from Narasaraopeta of Guntur Dist. My father is a civil engineer and mother is a homemaker. I had my studies from first to fifth at my native place and from fifth to tenth standard in Guntur Vignan. I completed intermediate in Hyderabad and secured 96% marks. Later I joined B.Tech in Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in CSE branch.

Inspiration from my sister:
My sister pursued B.Tech and presently she is working in Google in America. She inspired me to take engineering as a career. My interest in Math since childhood also drove me to take this career.

Placement offer:
I attended the campus placements of my college. I just wanted to prove myself in it and did not pay attention to the packages offered by the companies. After completion of the interview, the company offered me 58 lakhs annual salary. I felt very happy and this is my most cherishing achievement. My parents were also extremely happy on my job offer. My hard work in the four years of engineering and the approach of understanding the subjects on a conceptual basis helped me achieve success.

Interview:
My interview was with Epic systems of America. The placement is a two round process in which an online test is conducted on coding in the first round. The second round was a phone interview. They focused on questions from my educational background, parent’s profession, interests, goals and project work.

Skills judged:
Along with the marks obtained in the engineering degree, communication skills and good command on English language are also most important. Almost all companies judge these skills during the recruitment drive. They keep testing us on how capable are we in communicating with others. Body language and analytical skills are also tested. One important assessment of the companies is that how long we are going to stay in that company.

For successful placement:
One should concentrate on core subjects. Get well prepared for campus placements before actually attending them. Generally, companies ask some routine questions like 'why should we select you' and 'how much package are you expecting.’ Finally, we should be confident enough to the face the campus placement.

Four years of B.Tech:
If one aims to study B.Tech in IITs and IIITs, at least we can get a seat in a good college with adequate facilities. The half success in Engineering depends on what college we are studying. If a college does not provide good faculty and labs, we can supplement them by preparing notes and following online lectures in the internet. A general student perception is that it is sufficient to study hard in the final year, neglecting the previous years, but every year is equally important. The conceptual study of subjects helps for your success.

Future goal:
After working for two years, I wanted to do an MBA. To have a good career in your field, management skills are quite necessary.

Your advice to engineering students:
How hard you work, the ultimate goal is getting a good job. For this, you need to plan and prepare well from the first year itself. Get beforehand information of the placement companies and take guidance from the seniors who were already selected for those companies. Most of the campus placements are conducted around the end of the third year and one may loose opportunity when they are not well aware and ready for the recruitment drive at that time. Therefore, to avoid this, we need to plan our preparation accordingly. Studying coding books helps in the placements.
