Humanism should be the cornerstone of our endeavour to build a better society. Why?

By Srirangam Sriram, Sriram's IAS, New Delhi.
Humanism is a philosophical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively. Generally humanism refers to a perspective which holds that human freedom and progress are achieved by the human effort, reason and endeavour. It views humans as solely responsible for the promotion and development of individuals and emphasizes a concern for humans in relation to the world.

In modern times, humanist movements are both
  • non-religious movements aligned with secularism centred on human agency and looking to science for solution to human problems; as also
  • Theistic views where the human efforts are supported by faith in and guidance from God.

If Jawahar Lal Nehru is an example of the former, Mahatma Gandhi exemplifies the latter.
All science and innovation are a product of humanist pursuit of excellence with self- belief. Humanism impulses reasoning and human autonomy. It helps individually to advance and also carries the individual and society together. It brings about species unity and can protect the planet too as it breeds collective pursuits of a universal nature like social reform and scientific advancement. The Constitution of India has enormous humanist content in FRs, DPSPs and FDs.
