When we read or hear about great people who made history in being of service to humanity, one feature that threads them together is their moral courage- be it Mahatma Gandhi, Bala Gangadhar Tilak or Bhimrao Ambedkar. The courage they had shown in taking up moral challenges at great risk.
Moral courage is the courage to take action in pursuit of moral goals despite the risk of adverse consequences.
Courage is required to take action when one has doubts or fears about the consequences. Moral courage therefore involves deep convictions- be it about gender parity or child rights.
Moral courage may also require physical courage when the consequences are punishment or other bodily threat.
Civil servants need it because they are always dealing with issues that have huge opposition- taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Police need it while dealing with anti social elements who at times enjoy political support at a high level. Citizens need it to be good samaritans and democrats.
