Differentiate between Philanthropy and Charity. What is their importance in social progress?

By Srirangam Sriram, Sriram's IAS, New Delhi.
Philanthropy consists of private initiatives, for the public good, focusing on improving quality of life for all and particularly the disadvantaged quality of life. Philanthropy contrasts with business initiatives, which are private initiatives for private good, focusing on material gain, and with government endeavors, which are public initiatives for public good, focusing on provision of public goods.

The origin of the word Philanthropy is from the Greek that translates to: love of mankind.

The practice of charity means the voluntary giving of help to those in need, as a humanitarian act. Charitable giving is the act of giving money, goods or time to the unfortunate, either directly or by means of a charitable trust or other worthy cause. Charity is an immense emotional reaction to the necessity.

Philanthropy is different from charity, though there is some overlap. For example, paying the fees for a poor kid is a charity whereas constructing a school for all poor kids is philanthropy.

Charity tends to be a short-term, emotional, immediate response, focused primarily on rescue and relief, whereas philanthropy is much more long-term, more strategic, focused on rebuilding.

It may also be said that charity is short term response but philanthropy is a long term commitment. Charity donates fish while philanthropy teaches fishing.

Career Guidance Corporate social responsibility also falls in the same bracket but here the corporate spends the money of the company unlike philanthropy and charity where the personal resources are spent.
