Pro-learning Tips for Class 12 Students

Career GuidanceShould You Adopt These Techniques?
Class 12 is regarded as the focal point in a student’s life. It is one of the very first certifications that can showcase a student’s credibility and skills when pursuing an academic opportunity or a prospective career. Therefore, students have to ensure that they prepare well and showcase the best efforts in their exams.

However, not every student has the right strategy nor study technique to implement, hence, they might not be as effective or efficient as they desire to be. Nevertheless, adopting these tricks and techniques is a surefire way to help students to secure more marks.

Remember to Take Notes
Our brain processes a gargantuan amount of information every single day, from deciphering road signs and signposts to manoeuvring vehicles around traffic. Even interaction with a friend or a family member sees a lot of information being exchanged.

Unsurprisingly, the brain will not be able to retain all these information, especially the ones which are deemed crucial. Concepts which are taught at school seem practically impossible to recollect during an exam. However, seemingly trivial information, such as the lyrics of a song can be recalled with ease. Seems counter-intuitive when we really need to remember information, right?

Note-taking involves recording important information during a study session or a lecture. This is incredibly effective due to the fact that our hands, eyes, ears and the mind coordinate to record information. Furthermore, students are completely alert and engaged during this activity. As an added advantage, these personalized notes act as a useful resource when preparing for exams as these may contain valuable information which is not present in any textbook.

Mnemonics
Memorization is part of a student’s life and undoubtedly, one of the most crucial. In essence, a mnemonic is a memory tool used to recollect information with ease. It involves associating information with a unique phrase or a sentence. For example, the periodic table is one of the most important concepts to understand in chemistry. Remembering all the 118 elements might be quite a difficult task, but it can be done with the help of a mnemonic:

For example, Group 1 (alkali metals) include the following elements - Li Na K Rb Cs Fr. To easily remember these elements, associate the symbol with a word.
  • Li-Lion
  • Na - Nature
  • K - King
  • Rb - Ruby
  • Cs - Caeser
  • Fr - Friend

Then, make a sentence with the resulting words: “Lion, Nature’s King was Ruby Caeser’sFriend.” This makes the concept much easier to recall. Similarly, other important concepts or topics can be learnt in the same way.

Mind Mapping
When information is presented in a long, monotonous and voluminous format, it might be hard to digest. Important concepts might be overlooked and it would not be very practical from an examination perspective. But when information is represented in a diagrammatic format, with logical links, frameworks and relationships between elements, entire concepts or ideas can be comprehended with ease.

Career Guidance

For instance, the Classification of Organisms is quite an important concept in biology, however, the concept is very vast and it can be quite difficult to organise and learn all the aspects. However, using visual trackers or markers and interlinking them is a very efficient way to represent information. It enables easy comprehension of concepts in just a glance.

Information Chunking
As the name suggests, information chunking involves breaking down large volumes of information into smaller, more easily digestible chunks. The human brain is wired to process small bits and strings of information with ease. Therefore, we find it quite easy to remember phone numbers, ATM pins, small strings of information etc.

When the same idea is implemented in the learning process, comprehending information becomes easier. This is due to the fact that the cognitive load decreases, mental stress is reduced and as a result, the student can study for longer hours. All this translates to a very good learning experience.

Practice
To perfect any skill or activity, practice is essential. For instance, a dancer can execute a particularly difficult move flawlessly, but only after many sessions of practice. Similarly, if students want to perfect a concept in mathematics, science or any other subject, they need countless hours of practice. Furthermore, they can use many resources such as CBSE Sample Papers, previous years question papers and more to perfect concepts.

Review And Revise
A learning process is deemed incomplete without revision. Revision is absolutely necessary as it helps the student to cement what they learnt. Furthermore, information can be recalled accurately and easily.

One of the biggest concerns that students face during an exam is information distortion, that is, the information that they recall has chances of being wrongly recalled. This is not desirable as the students may lose valuable marks in the exam. But frequent revision will help prevent such problems.

Diet And Exercise
Sometimes, the right learning practices and techniques are not enough to secure good marks, students need to take care of their health too. From a proper diet to appropriate sleeping habits, every aspect of health influences the learning process.

For instance, the body requires “brain food” to function efficiently. Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are essential for neurological and cardiovascular health. Fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel are sufficiently rich in omega 3 fats. Chia seeds, walnuts and soybeans are also good substitutes that contain omega 3 fatty acids.

Besides a healthy diet, sufficient sleep is also necessary for mental health. Studies have shown that sleep influences the part of the brain responsible for consolidating memories. Sleep deprivation can make it harder to focus, drastically impact motor coordination and control. Therefore, ensure that you get adequate sleep of at least 8 to 9 hours a day.
