IELTS (International English Language Testing System):
It is for people who intend to study or work where English is the communication language. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centers with tests up to four times a month. IELTS managed by three reputable, international organisations: British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL). You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training, depending on whether you want to study, work or migrate. Both modules are made up of four parts - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS results are graded on the unique IELTS 9-band scale.
IELTS test structure:
There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Candidates are graded on their performance in the test, using scores from 1 to 9 for each part of the test - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your results from the four parts then produce an Overall Band Score.
Validity: An IELTS result is valid for two years.

IELTS is available on 48 fixed dates a year - up to four times a month depending on local demand.

To help you prepare for the test, IELTS has a range of materials. Firstly, download the free Information for candidate’s booklet which provides an explanation of the test. In the website you can also practice free sample questions online. These give you an idea of what to expect in the Reading, Writing and speaking parts. Some IELTS centers have workshops to help you prepare for the test. The IELTS Official Practice Materials is the only IELTS training book endorsed by the IELTS partners. It will ensure you to do the test to the best of your ability. You can purchase it through your test centers.

IELTS is compulsory to get admission in Australian, Canadian, New Zealand universities and other universities of the world other than US. But now, this would sound great to many as IELTS is accepted in many of the US universities too. As more and more students are taking IELTS, US universities have recognized the IELTS to judge students' English proficiency for admission. With this, Indian students can simultaneously apply for Australian, UK and US universities.

- Both Academic and General Training formats are made up of four modules - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
- All candidates take a common Listening and Speaking Modules, while the Reading and Writing Modules differ depending on whether the candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Versions of the Test.
- The total test duration is around 2 hours and 45 minutes for Listening, Reading and Writing modules.
Listening 4 Sections 30 minutes.
Reading 3 Sections 60 minutes.
Writing 2 tasks 60 minutes.
Speaking - 11- 14 minutes
- Three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing (always in that order) - are completed in one day, and in fact are taken with no break in between. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test centre, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules.
- Institutions of Higher and Further Education. The Academic format is for those who want to study or train in an English-speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test. General Training:
- For school, work or migration. The General Training format focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. It is for those who are going to English speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand must take the General Training test.
