World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum dies in road accident
  • In an event that has cast a shadow over the world of athletics, Kelvin Kiptum, the men’s marathon world record holder, and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, met with a tragic end in a traffic accident on the night of February 12, 2024.
  • At only 24 years of age, Kiptum had already made history at the Chicago Marathon in October by setting a new world record of 2:00:35, surpassing the previous record held by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge. His performance in Chicago was the culmination of a year in which he also shattered the London Marathon course record, signalling his arrival as one of the most exciting prospects in road running.
