This annual day, observed on June 17th, is dedicated to raising global awareness about the importance of healthy land and the fight against desertification and drought. It's a call to action for individuals, organizations, and governments to work together to ensure a sustainable future for our planet.

History:

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established WDCD in 1995 to highlight the international efforts  being made to combat desertification. Desertification is the process of fertile land becoming arid and unproductive.

  • Driest Non-Polar Place on Earth: The Atacama Desert in South America holds the title for the driest non-polar place on Earth.

  • Coldest Desert: The Antarctic Desert, located on the continent of Antarctica, is the world's coldest desert.
  • Largest and Coldest Asian Desert: The Gobi Desert, spanning parts of China and Mongolia, is the largest and coldest desert in Asia.
