  • Ajit Pawar resigns as deputy CM of Maharashtra
    Current AffairsMaharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has resigned, four days after he controversially joined BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis’s government and said he had the support of legislators belonging to his National Congress Party.

    Ajit Pawar resigned after the Supreme Court this morning ordered Fadnavis to take a floor test on Wednesday, prompting a three-party Opposition alliance to claim victory against the BJP.

    Devendra Fadnavis resigns as Maharashtra chief minister, stating that he doesn't have the majority anymore after Ajit Pawar's resignation.

    "In elections clear majority was given to 'Mahayuti' and BJP got maximum 105 seats. We contested with Shiv Sena, but this mandate was for BJP because BJP won 70 percent seats out of all seats we contested," he said.

    The BJP leader claimed that the Shiv Sena told them before election, that they will go with anyone which gives them the CM post.

    After the Supreme Court ordered floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly tomorrow, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar put in his papers today. Both Fadnavis and Pawar were sworn-in as the CM and deputy chief minister, respectively, of the state on Saturday morning.

    Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said. "Ajit dada has resigned and he is with us. Uddhav Thackeray will be the chief Minister of Maharashtra for five years," Raut said.

    Earlier in the day, the apex court said the Fadnavis government has to prove his majority in the House as there is "possibility of horse trading" in case of delay.

    In the 288-member assembly, the BJP had won 105 seats, followed by Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54 and Congress 44.

  • General Bipin Rawat set to be first Chief of Defence Staff
    General Bipin Rawat visits military establishments as his tenure as the Army Chief draws to an end in December. He to take over as the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). It is a four-star position being created as part of defence management. He served a rare full three-year term as the Army Chief. He provides military adviser to the government and implement joint procurement by the three services.

    His appointment of a new CDS is expected to be announced in December. The joint operations and tri-services commands are likely to be overseen by the CDS the top officer is set to be heavily involved in and procurement of military equipment.

  • Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza appointed as New Chief of Joint Staff of Pakistan Army
    Pakistan Army announced the appointment of Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the new Chief of Joint Staff and also the promotion of two Major Generals to the post of Lt General. Ali Amir Awan and Muhammad Saeed serving as Major Generals elevated to the ranks of Lieutenant Generals. He is appointed Chief of Joint Staff.

    He is appointed as Inspector General Communications & Information Technology (IG C&IT), and Saeed appointed as president of National Defence University, Islamabad. Lt General Shaheen Mazhar Mehmood appointed the Commander of Mangla Corps, and Lt General Nauman Mahmood appointed the Commander of Peshawar Corps.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed Lt Gen Nadeem Raza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with effect from November 27. He extended the tenure of Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, for three years.

    Australian writer and broadcaster, Clive James dies at 80. Diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2010, the author and critic had movingly written about his terminal illness during the final years of his life.

    Born in 1939, he moved to England in 1961 and rose to prominence as a literary critic and TV columnist. He went on to deliver wry commentary on international programming in such shows as Clive James on Television.

  • China appoints Chris Tang Ping-Keung as new police chief in Hong Kong
    Current AffairsChina has appointed Chris Tang Ping-Keung as new police chief in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong government said the new chief's appointment was made on the recommendation and nomination of Chief Executive Carrie Lam and with the final approval of the State Council in Beijing.

    The new chief, Chris Tang Ping-Keung, said rebutting fake accusations against police and reassuring the public about the force's mission would be among his priorities.

    Tang has been on the police force for more than 30 years and takes over from Lo Wai-Chung, who is retiring after 35 years of service.

    Meanwhile, about 100 anti-government protesters remained holed up at a Hong Kong university today, unsure what to do next as food supplies dwindled and a police siege of the campus entered its third day.

  • Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth claimed victory in the Mauritius election
    Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth claimed victory in the Mauritius election.

    Roughly three-quarters of the island's almost one million eligible voters turned out to cast their ballots, a bit above the last poll in 2014.

    It is the first time in decades that three distinct political blocs vied for power in the legislative elections.

  • Pravind Jugnauth sworn in as Mauritius PM
    Mauritius's incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth was sworn in for a five-year term on 12 November, 2019 after elections in which his coalition consolidated its grip on parliament.

    Mr Jugnauth's swearing-in took place at the residence of President Barlen Vyapoory. He immediately proposed a new cabinet of 23 members.

    It includes three women, including newcomer Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah, who will take over the gender equality Ministry.

  • Shafqat Mehmood elected as the President of UNESCO’s Education Commission
    Shafqat Mehmood, the Minister for Education and Professional Training, has been unanimously elected as President of UNESCO's Education Commission in Paris, France.

    Shafqat Mehmood would work closely with all delegations in a constructive manner in pursuance of the main objectives of UNESCO.

    He held bilateral meetings with Ministers of Education of Bangladesh, Norway, and Tunisia.

    He also met Assistant Director Generals of UNESCO for Education and Culture.

    The commission will work to move towards a global classification framework for teacher policy dialogue.

    It will finalize the draft text of the global convention on the recognition of higher education qualifications.

  • Mohammad Imran appointed Bangladesh High Commissioner to India
    Mohammad Imran has been appointed as the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India. He is currently Bangladesh's Ambassador to United Arab Emirates. He succeeds Syed Muazzem Ali.

    The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh on 11 November, 2019

    A career diplomat Muhammad Imran belongs to the 1986 batch of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Foreign Affairs cadre. He has served Bangladesh Missions in different capacities in Kolkata, Berlin, Bonn, Ottawa and Jeddah. He has also been Bangladesh's Ambassador to Uzbekistan.

    Dr Mohammad Imran is a graduate from Mymensingh Medical College.

  • The first female JAG officer in Indian Army (GK>current)
    Lieutenant Colonel Jyoti Sharma has been appointed as the Indian Army's first female Judge Advocate General officer to be deployed on a foreign mission.

    She will be appointed as the military legal expert with the government of Seychelles. The main role of Jyoti would be to update the government of Seychelles officials on the defence and military act.

    The Indian Army is also preparing to induct women in the Military Police Corps. In April 2019, the Indian Army started the process of inducting women as jawans by starting their online registration for recruitment in the Corps Of Military Police.

    India Army will induct women in a graded manner to eventually compromise 20% of the total Corps of Military Police.

  • Andhra Pradesh government appointed Nilam Sawhney as Chief Secretary of the State
    The Andhra Pradesh government appointed IAS officer Nilam Sawhney as Chief Secretary of the State on 13th November 2019.

    She became the first woman chief secretary of bifurcated Andhra Pradesh. She will replace the senior IAS officer LV Subrahmanyam as Chief Secretary.

    The repatriation of Sawhney was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), who was serving as Secretary, Social Justice, and Empowerment. Nilam Sawhney is a 1984 batch IAS officer of Andhra cadre.

  • Nepal's President appoints new governors in all seven provinces
    Current AffairsNepal's President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appointed new governors in all seven provinces of the country.

    Somnath Adhikari ‘Pyasi’ will be the new governor of Province 1, Tilak Pariyar for Province 2, Bishnu Prasad Prasai for Province 3, Amik Sherchan for Gandaki Province, Dharmanath Yadav for Province 5, Govinda Kalauni for Karnali Province and Sharmila Kumari Panta for Sudur Paschim Province.

    Earlier President Bidya Devi Bhandari had relieved governors of all seven provinces on 03 November, 2019.

    They were appointed in January 2018 by the outgoing Nepali Congress government after first ever provincial elections in the Himalyan nation.

    Nepal adopted federalism after the promulgation of new constitution in September 2015.

    First time in the history of the country elections for seven provincial assemblies were held in two phases on 26 November and 7 December 2017.

    Left Alliance had registered landslide victory in the historic elections.

  • Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan re-elected as President of UAE
    The UAE's Supreme Council of the Union has re-elected His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as its President for a fourth five-year term, in accordance with the provisions of the UAE Constitution.

    President Sheikh Khalifa was first elected President of the UAE by the Supreme Council of the Union on 3rd November, 2004.

    President Sheikh Khalifa accompanied the builder of the UAE renaissance, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in the founding stage in the 70s and 80s of the last century.

    After the death of the Founding Father, he led the country and contributed to the prosperity of the UAE, and its prominence locally and globally.

  • Four Indian-Americans win state, local elections in US
    Four Indian-Americans, including a former White House Technology Policy Adviser, have won state and local elections held in the United States.

    Indian-American Ghazala Hashmi, a former community college professor, created history by becoming the first Muslim woman to be elected to the Virginia State Senate, while Suhas Subramanyam, who served as the White House Technology Policy Adviser to former President Barack Obama, has been elected to the Virginia State House of Representative.

    In her maiden attempt, Hashmi, a Democrat, defeated incumbent Republican State Senator Glen Sturtevant for Virginia's 10th Senate District, drawing national attention. She currently serves as the founding Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at Reynolds Community College.

    Subramanyam led a task force on technology policy that Obama charged with addressing some of the country's most challenging technology issues, including job creation and displacement in the technology sector, regulating emerging technology, and addressing cyber-security and IT modernization in the public sector.

    In California, Indian-American Mano Raju won his election to remain San Francisco's Public Defender. In North Carolina, incumbent Dimple Ajmera, a former Certified Public Accountant, won a convincing re-election to Charlotte City Council.
