  • Who appointed as the 1st VP & COO of Federal bank of India?
    Current Affairs Indian-American Naureen Hassan, a 25-year veteran of the financial services industry, has been named as the First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

    The Indian-origin veteran of the financial services industry has been appointed by the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as the first vice president and chief operating officer, effective from 15 March. The appointment was approved by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said in a statement.

    Hassan, whose parents had immigrated from India, is a 25-year veteran of the financial services industry with expertise in strategy, digital transformation, cybersecurity and regulatory/risk management.

    She was, most recently, the Chief Digital Officer for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM).

    President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Fed John Williams said Hassan’s leadership background, deep commitment to fostering diverse teams, and extensive technology and financial experience will be critical to her role as a Bank leader.

    Denise Scott, executive vice president of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and chair of the New York Fed’s board of directors, said Hassan’s leadership experience and operational expertise are "fully aligned" with what the search committee and he envisioned for this role.

    Scott said Hassan will be taking on the role that is critical to advancing the Bank’s mission and strategic priorities.

    The statement added that Hassan has served in various capacities in the financial services industry, focusing primarily on digital and business process transformation.

    Prior to working at Morgan Stanley, she was at Charles Schwab Corporation beginning as a vice president of corporate strategy and ending her tenure as executive vice president of investor services, segments and platforms.

  • Who has been appointed as MD and CEO of Arcil?
    Asset Reconstruction Company (India) Ltd (Arcil) on Tuesday announced the appointment of Pallav Mohapatra as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

    Prior to the appointment, Mohapatra was the MD and CEO of Central Bank of India (CBoI) from September 21, 2018, to February 28, 2021. Before being elevated as MD and CEO of CBoI, he was Deputy Managing Director, Stressed Assets Management Group, State Bank of India.

    Vinayak Bahuguna headed Arcil as MD and CEO for five years till June 2020.

    Anil Gorthy, Chairman, Arcil, in a statement, said Mohapatra brings with him years of seasoned banking insight and a wealth of experience in the industry, particularly management of stressed assets.

    Arcil, which was set up in 2002, currently has assets under management (in non-performing loans) of ?12,000 crore, according to the statement.

  • Who has been appointed as new Chief Statistician?
    The government has appointed G P Samanta as the new Chief Statistician of India for a period of two years. Samanta was till now an adviser in the RBI's Department of Statistics and Information Management. “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr GP Samanta as Chief Statistician of India (CSI)-cum-Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation initially for a period of two years,” the Department of Personnel and Training said in an order dated March 9. Samanta is India’s fourth CSI.

    Kshatrapati Shivaji, a 1986-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, was given additional charge as MoSPI secretary in September last year after the tenure of Pravin Srivastava ended on August 31, 2020.

    The government had then said the CSI will be the head of the National Statistical Organisation and secretary of the National Statistical Commission, and have a tenure of three years.

    A search committee constituted by the government recommends a panel of names for filling the vacancy and applicants have to be Indian nationals with “proven statistical and managerial experience in a large statistical organisation”.

    The CSI’s responsibilities include coming out with key economic data such as national accounts that encompasses gross domestic product along with macroeconomic indicators such as industrial production, retail inflation and the employment-unemployment numbers through the Periodic Labour Force Survey.

    The Annual Survey of Industries, Economic Census, Consumer Expenditure Survey and other surveys on agricultural households, too come under the CSI’s domain.

    Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Hamed Bakayoko, passed away in Germany. President Alassane Ouattara said that their country is in mourning.

    Bakayoko, who was receiving treatment for cancer, breathed his last yesterday, just days after his 56th birthday. He was appointed Prime Minister in July, following the sudden death of his predecessor Amadou Gon Coulibaly.

    A former media executive who turned to politics, he played a prominent mediation role in Ivory Coast's civil war during the first decade of the century.
