2020-21: Female labour participation increased to 25.1%

- According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) annual report for July 2020-June 2021, the all-India female labour force participation rate (LFPR) in ordinary status grew 2.3 percent to 25.1 percent in 2021, up from 22.8 percent the previous year. In rural areas, female labour force participation has climbed by 3% to 27.7%, whereas in urban areas, female labour force participation has increased by 0.1 percent to 18.6%. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) is the proportion of people who work in the population.
- The usual status of a person was defined as the activity status on which he or she spent a significant amount of time in the 365 days prior to the survey date.
- The overall LFPR for people of all ages in typical status in India has grown slightly from 40.1 percent in 2019-20 to 41.6 percent in 2020-21.
- In India, the LFPR in usual status for people aged 15 to 29 years is 41.4 percent, while it is 54.9 percent for people aged 15 and up.
- At the same time, India’s worker population ratio (WPR) in normal status for people of all ages is 39.8%. The Workforce Participation Rate (WPR) is the percentage of the population who are employed.
