- The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed that the country has submitted a formal request to join the BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The decision stems from Pakistan's recognition of BRICS as a crucial assembly of developing nations that espouses inclusive multilateralism, as stated by Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the Ministry spokesperson, during a media briefing reported by Xinhua news agency.
- Baloch expressed Pakistan's belief that joining BRICS would enable the nation to play a significant role in advancing international cooperation and promoting inclusive multilateralism. Highlighting Pakistan's amicable relations with most BRICS members and the newly invited countries, she emphasized the potential for constructive collaboration.
- The spokesperson conveyed hope that BRICS would proceed with Pakistan's request in alignment with its commitment to inclusive multilateralism. This development follows the 15th BRICS Summit held in South Africa in August, where Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were extended invitations to join the bloc. Their memberships are set to take effect on January 1, 2024.
