Nine Ethiopian groups to form an anti-government alliance

In Ethiopia, nine anti-government groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), have agreed to form an alliance against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's administration. It comes as pressure mounts on Mr Abiy, with rebel forces making advances towards the capital.

However, the government in Addis Ababa has said it's on the brink of victory and will continue to fight what it calls an existential war. Ethiopia’s international partners have called for an end to the hostilities. The OLA and TPLF have already started fighting alongside each other and this week claimed to have captured the town of Kemise, 325km (200 miles) north of Addis Ababa.

Both sides in this conflict continue to reject calls to halt their military operations.
