  • On the occasion of National Science Day 2022, the government has launched an International Monsoons Project Office. It was launched by Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoS (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Earth Sciences; PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space.
  • Initially for five years, the International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO) will be based at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune.
  • The IMPO was set up to highlight the importance of monsoons for the economy of the nation.
  • Under the leadership of the World Climate Research Programme and the World Weather Research Programme, IMPO would identify and foster as well as include connections and activities which will be related to international monsoon research.
  • The United Nations World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) coordinates the World Weather Research Programme and World Climate Research Programmes.
  • Setting up the IMPO will mean that the integrated scientific approach will be expanded to come up with solutions for solving the seasonal variability of monsoons, improving the prediction skill of cyclones and monsoons, strengthening the monsoon research for better services and support operations, and promoting knowledge sharing and capacity building in areas of monsoon research which are critical for water resources, agriculture, hydropower, disaster management, and climate-sensitive socio-economic sectors.
  • Establishing the IMPO will provide a boost to worldwide monsoon research, benefiting both the Indian as well as international academic communities.
