Bangladesh approves project for upgradation of Cumilla-Brahmanbaria to 4 lane highway with Indian LOC support

- The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) of Bangladesh on Tuesday approved the upgradation project of the Cumilla (Mainamati)- Brahmanbaria (Dharkhar) National Highway into four lanes. Briefing media in Dhaka after the ECNEC meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam said that out of the total project cost of Taka 7188 crore, Taka 2810 crore will come from the Indian Line of Credit (LOC). The Roads and Highways Department under the Road Transport and Highways Division will implement the project by June 2026.
- This project would turn Sylhet and Chattogram regions into important commercial hubs. After completion, the 4-lane highway will strengthen the regional connectivity between India and Bangladesh. It Will turn Chattogram Port into a centre of international trade and commerce.
- The project is included in priority-2 of the eight priority corridors to boost bilateral and sub-regional trade with the neighbouring countries including India under the technical assistance project titled ‘Technical Assistance for sub-regional Road Transport Project Preparatory Facility (SRTPPF)’.
- The main project operations include 102.79 hectares of land acquisition, 1450560 cubic metre of earth work, construction of 49.53 kilometre flexible pavement and 4.47 kilometre rigid pavement, construction of 14 bridges, one flyover, two underpasses, 50 culverts and 12 foot over bridges, reports the official news agency BSS.
