NATIONAL

Make in India initiative completes seven years

  • Manufacturing sector is making strides in the development of the Indian economy.
  • To make the country self-reliant in the sector, the Centre launched the Make in India initiative on 25th of September 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The initiative is aimed at facilitating investment, fostering innovation and building best in class manufacturing infrastructure. Since the launch of the Make in India initiative, the country witnessed stellar performance in its growth and development.
  • It helped in ease of doing the business procedures and enhanced skill development. It also created a conducive environment for investment and opened new sectors for foreign investment. It also helped in forging a partnership between government and industry.
  • The Centre has taken various measures to promote the manufacturing sector. Recently, it launched National Single Window System as a one-stop for taking all the regulatory approvals and services.
  •  It will further improve the Ease of Doing Business in India for international and local businesses.
  • Production Linked Incentives, PLI have also been brought in to make the country Aatmanirbhar and to enhance the manufacturing capabilities. The Government has earmarked 1.97 lakh crore rupees for different PLI schemes for 13 key sectors.
  • Make in India initiatives have brought in more inflow of Foreign Direct Investments during the last seven years. This enabled India to achieve the FDI inflow of 440 billion US dollars with the highest ever annual FDI inflow of 81.72 billion dollars in 2020-21.

PM Modi to address UN General Assembly in New York

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached New York to address the 76th session of UNGA.
  • Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden met at the Oval Office in the White House.
  • The two leaders gave a clarion call to write a new chapter in the fight against Covid 19, climate change and to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Mr. Modi praised the role played by President Biden and the United States in tackling the challenges of Covid 19. He underlined the importance of strong and vibrant Indo-US ties for a better world.
  • President Biden said the two nations have a shared responsibility to democratic values, commitment to the welfare of the people and family ties.
  • President Biden said the global community looks forward to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi as the world celebrates his birthday next week.
  • Prime Minister Modi said Mahatma Gandhi always used to talk about trusteeship of the Planet and this sentiment of trusteeship has to be carried forward by India and United States for global good. 

Ministry of Civil Aviation releases India’s airspace map for drone operations

  • Ministry of Civil Aviation released India’s airspace map for drone operations.
  • The map is available on DGCA’s digital sky platform, digitalsky.dgca.gov.in/home.
  • The drone airspace map comes as a follow-through of the liberalised Drone Rules, 2021 released by the Central Government on 25th of last month, the PLI scheme for drones released on 15th of this month and the Geospatial Data Guidelines issued on 15th February this year.
  • All these policy reforms will catalyse super-normal growth in the upcoming drone sector.
  • Civil Aviation Ministry said, drones offer tremendous benefits to almost all sectors of the economy.
  • These include agriculture, mining, infrastructure, surveillance, emergency response, transportation, geo-spatial mapping, defence, and law enforcement to name a few.
  • Drones can be significant creators of employment and economic growth due to their reach, versatility, and ease of use, especially in India’s remote and inaccessible areas.
  • Given its traditional strengths in innovation, information technology, frugal engineering and its huge domestic demand, India has the potential of becoming a global drone hub by 2030.

MIB Anurag Thakur inaugurates five days ‘First Himalayan Film Festival' in Leh

  • Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur inaugurated five days ‘First Himalayan Film Festival' in a star studded program at SindhuSanskriti Kendra, Leh. 
  • The festival is a part of the celebrations of ‘AzadiKa Amrit Mahotsav’.  The film festival will showcase talent across 12 Himalayan states and UTs.
  • ‘Shershaah’, the biographical war movie based on ‘ParamVir Chakra’ awardee Captain Vikram Batra is being screened in the opening ceremony.  Anurag Thakur in his address said that cinema provides a platform to bring all the cultural diversities together, the new identity to every corner of India has been provided by the Indian Cinema.

Centre notifies Production Linked Incentive Scheme for automobile & auto components

  • The Centre has notified Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for automobile and auto components.
  • The scheme will be implemented over a period of five years starting from financial year 2022 to 2023.
  • It is estimated that the scheme will help create additional employment of over 7.5 lakh jobs in the auto sector.
  • It will also attract fresh investments of over 42 thousand 500 crore rupees in five years.
  • The government has recently approved the PLI Scheme for automobile and auto component industry.
  • The incentive structure will encourage industry to make fresh investments for indigenous global supply chain of advanced automotive technology products.
  • This scheme will help in increasing India’s share in global automotive trade.

  • He said this sentiment of trusteeship has to be carried forward by India and United States for global good. The two leaders are now engaged in high level delegation level talks.
  • This meeting will be followed by the first ever in person meeting of the QUAD leaders.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warns of human rights catastrophe under military rule in Myanmar

  • The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has warned of a human rights catastrophe under military rule in Myanmar.
  • He urged the international community to do more to prevent the conflict in the country from getting worse. In a statement, he said, the national consequences are terrible and tragic – the regional consequences could also be profound.
  • The international community must redouble its efforts to restore democracy and prevent wider conflict before it is too late.
  • Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup on 1st of February, ending 10 years of tentative steps towards democracy and prompting outrage at home and abroad.
  • Armed resistance forces have been formed in various regions, which have clashed with the military, prompting many thousands to flee, including to neighboring India in recent days.

Somalia hosts first public film-screening in 30 years

  • Somalia has hosted its first public film-screening in 30 years - raising hopes of a cultural revival in the war-ravaged country.
  • Two short films by Somali director Ibrahim C.M. were shown at the National Theatre in the capital Mogadishu, where heavy security was in place.
  • The theatre was built by Chinese engineers as a gift from China's leader Mao Zedong in 1967. It was seen as an important driver for Somalia's cultural development in the 1970s and 80s.
  • It closed in 1991 at the start of the civil war and was used as a base for warlords fighting over the capital. The theatre fell into disrepair as a result. When it reopened in 2012 - after repairs carried out by the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) - the building was immediately blown up by al-Shabab militants who considered live entertainment and films to be morally corrupt.

China calls on G20 members to help ease the liquidity pressure in Afghanistan

  • At the G20 virtual foreign ministers’ meeting on Afghanistan, China reiterated its support for the interim Taliban government in Kabul.
  • Chinese state counsellor and foreign minister Wang Yi attended the meet virtually and said that Economic sanctions against Afghanistan must end and unilateral restrictions on the country should be lifted as soon as possible. Sanctions should not be used as leverage to exert political pressure on Afghanistan, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement on Wang Yi’s speech at the virtual meet.
  • China calls on G20 members to actively adopt concrete measures to help ease the liquidity pressure in Afghanistan, the statement said citing Wang Yi.
  • Afghanistan’s peaceful reconstruction and medium and long-term development cannot do without financial support from the international community, the top Chinese diplomat said. Wang Yi called on the Group of 20 (G20) to speed up their efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
  • China announced earlier this month that it had decided to urgently provide 200-million-yuan ($30.96 million) worth of grains, winter supplies, vaccines and other medicines to Afghanistan, including an initial 3 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, Wang Yi noted.

China-Taiwan war of words over latter’s bid to join CPTPP

  • China and Taiwan have targeted each other in another war of words over their separate bids to join a trans-Pacific trade pact with Beijing opposing Taipei’s attempt to join Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
  • Beijing called on the 11 members of the CPTPP to oppose the self-ruled island’s application, a move Taipei has called the act of an arch bully. 11 member countries in the CPTPP are in dilemma, as support for Taipei could affect their economic ties with Beijing, which also applied to join the pact last week.
  • Joining the CPTPP would reinforce Taiwan’s global trade status and build better connections with other nations.
  • Taiwan had consulted with member nations of the pact, and made necessary legal amendments over recent years.
  • Taipei officially submitted its application to join the partnership as “the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu (Chinese Taipei)” – the same title it uses in the World Trade Organization, of which Beijing is also a member.

ECONOMY

US markets jump over 1% due to Federal Reserve’s stance on tapering stimulus

  • US markets jumped more than 1 percent yesterday as investors appeared relieved about the Federal Reserve’s stance on tapering stimulus and raising interest rates.
  • Upbeat outlooks from Accenture and Sales force helped bolster the market, while the US Food and Drug Administration late Wednesday authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for those 65 and older.
  • Also helping sentiment, concern about contagion from China Evergrande continued to ease.
  • So, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 507 points, or 1.5 percent, to end at 34,765.
  • The S&P 500 climbed 53 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 4,449. And the Nasdaq Composite added 155 points, to 15,052.

Odisha to host junior men's World Cup Hockey from November 24 to December 5

  • Odisha will host the junior men's World Cup Hockey in coming November. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced this in capital Bhubaneswar last evening. He also unveiled the logo and trophy for the tournament.
  • As many as 16 countries will take part in the event that will be held in the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar from the 24th November 5th December 2021. Odisha had hosted the 2018 men's hockey world cup.
