India-Australia Relations: From A Dull to The Forefront of International Partnerships

  • India is one of Australia’s most important Indo-Pacific partners, with the relationship characterised by strong people-to-people links and close cooperation at all levels of government.
  • The Australia-India relationship is at a high point, underpinned by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership announced by Prime Ministers Morrison and Modi in June 2020, significant investments to bolster our economic ties announced as part of the India Economic Strategy Update, launched in March 2022, and the signing of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement in April 2022.
  • The Australia-India Council (AIC) was established on 21 May 1992 in response to a recommendation by the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, following an inquiry into Australia’s relations with India. AIC broadens the relationship between Australia & India raising awareness & promoting exchanges.

Russia fires 84 missiles on Ukrainian cities, killing 11 people

  • Russia fired 84 missiles on busy Ukrainian cities yesterday, killing 11 people. This was Russia's most widespread air attack since the start of the conflict. Missiles tore into busy intersections, parks and tourist sites in the centre of the capital Kyiv. Explosions were also reported in Lviv, Ternopil and Zhytomyr in western Ukraine, Dnipro and Kremenchuk in central Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia in the south and Kharkiv in the east.
  • Ukrainian officials said at least 11 people were killed and scores injured. The missiles targeted power plants, leaving swathes of the country without electricity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian attacks were deliberately timed to kill people, as well as to knock out Ukraine’s power grid.
  • US President Joe Biden and G7 leaders will hold a virtual meeting today to discuss their commitment to support Ukraine and hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for Moscow's aggression.

Gross direct tax collection increases by over 23 % to Rs 8,98,000 crore in current financial year

  • The gross direct tax collections has increased by over 23 per cent to eight lakh ninety eight thousand crore rupees in the current financial year as compared to last year.
  • The provisional figures of direct tax collections till yesterday continue to register steady growth. Direct Tax collection, net of refunds, stands at seven lakh forty five thousand crore rupees which is 16.3 per cent higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of last year. The Ministry said, this collection is over 52 per cent of the total budget estimates of direct taxes for the current fiscal.
  • The refunds amounting to one lakh 53 thousand crore rupees have been issued during 1st April to 8th October this year, which are 81 per cent higher than refunds issued during the same period in the preceding year.

Coal Ministry issues Allocation Order for 12 Coal Mines

  • The Ministry of Coal has issued Allocation Order for 12 Coal Mines. The cumulative Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of the 12 coal mines for which orders have been issued is 21 million tonnes per annum and Geological Reserve is 2300 million tonnes.
  • The Ministry said in a statement that these mines are expected to generate an Annual Revenue of 3,569 crore rupees calculated on the basis of PRC and will attract Capital Investment of 3208 crore rupees. It will provide employment to nearly 28,800 people both directly and indirectly.

Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W Diamond & Philip H Dybvig receives Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for research on banks & financial crises

  • This year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded to the former chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, Ben S. Bernanke and two US-based economists, Douglas W Diamond and Philip H Dybvig, for research on banks and financial crises. The prize was announced today by the Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
  • The Committee said their work had shown in their research “why avoiding bank collapses is vital.” Nobel prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor.

36th National Games: Maharashtra bag 3 gold medals in Mallakhamb, ShauryajitKhaire becomes youngest medallist of 2022 Games

  • At the 36th National Games in Gujarat, Maharashtra's Mallakhambh stars, led by the reigning queen Rupali Sunil Gangwane, swept three of the five gold medals yesterday to take their state to the second position on the medal table, ahead of Haryana.
  • Maharashtra, with 34 gold medals, overtook Haryana, third with 32, in the National Games medals tally.
  • Maharashtra also have the biggest medal haul at this edition of the National Games with a total of 126 medals, including 36 silver and 56 bronze. Services, with 53 gold medals and a total of 115, continue to lead the National Games medals table. Maharashtra’s Rupali Gangawane bagged the gold medal in the women’s rope Mallakhamb competition with 9.25 points. Maharashtra’s Akshay Prakash Taral won gold in the men’s rope competition with 8.95 points. Shubhankar Vinay Khawle scored 9.20 points in the pole competition to win Maharashtra’s third gold medal in Mallakhamb.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen wins F1 Japanese Grand Prix

  • Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was declared Formula One world champion after winning a dramatic rain-shortened Japanese Grand Prix. This was the 25-year-old Dutchmans second championship in a row, which he won with four races to go.
  • Red Bull’s Verstappen crossed the line first and he was then awarded the title when second-place finisher Charles Leclerc was given a five-second penalty, dropping him to third.

Novak Djokovic wins Astana Open, takes 90th Career Title

  • With a convincing straight-sets win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP final in Astana Open, Novak Djokovic won his 90th career championship and fourth in 2022.
  •  In 75 minutes, the 35-year-old Novak Djokovic prevailed 6-3, 6-4 to add this trophy to those he has already won this year in Israel, Rome, and Wimbledon.
  • The fourth seed, Novak Djokovic won his ninth straight match, and as a consequence of the victory, he secured a place at the 2022 ATP Finals.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Mohammed Rizwan seal ICC Player of the Month crowns for September

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month awards for September 2022.
  •  India’s inspirational captain Harmanpreet Kaur is named the recipient of the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award, While Pakistan ace Mohammad Rizwan claims the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur becomes India’s first winner of the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. The India skipper was at her brilliant best during the ODI series, scoring 221 runs across the three matches, maintaining a strike rate of 103.47 and only being dismissed once.

Cristiano Ronaldo reached record 700 club career goals

  • Cristiano Ronaldo reached another historic landmark in his extraordinary career by scoring his 700th club goal to seal Manchester United’s comeback win over Everton. The 37-year-old Portuguese forward becomes the first and only player in this present generation to score seven times a hundred goals in football history.
  •  His 700th club goal extends his tally over Lionel Messi with Argentina forward scoring 691 goals for Fc Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain.
