Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh holds bilateral talks with Minister of National Defence of Vietnam

  • Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh today held bilateral talks with Minister of National Defence of Vietnam General Phan Van Giang today in New Delhi. Mr Singh and his Vietnamese counterpart exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. The talks were held to further boost the defence cooperation between India and Vietnam.
  • Progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives was reviewed during the meeting, with both sides expressing satisfaction at the ongoing engagements. Both Ministers identified means to enhance existing areas of collaboration, especially in the field of defence industry cooperation, maritime security and multinational cooperation. The Raksha Mantri also announced the gifting of indigenously-built in-service Missile Corvette INS Kirpan which will be a milestone in enhancing the capabilities of Vietnam People’s Navy.
  • As part of his engagements, the Defence Minister of Vietnam also visited DRDO headquarters and discussed ways to enhance defence industrial capabilities by cooperation in defence research and joint production.
  • Earlier today, the Vietnamese Minister of National Defence laid a wreath and paid homage to the Bravehearts at National War Memorial in New Delhi.

INS 'Vagir' set to embark on operational visit to Colombo

  • Indian Navy's state-of-the-art submarine, INS 'Vagir', is all set to embark on an operational visit to Colombo from June 19 to June 22. This visit is in commemoration of the 9th edition of the International Day of Yoga and aligns with the theme of 'Global Ocean Ring'. During the visit, the Commanding Officer of the Indian Naval submarine, is scheduled to meet Rear Admiral Suresh De Silva, the Commander of the Western Naval Area, during this visit.
  • INS 'Vagir' will also open its doors to visitors and school children, allowing them a rare opportunity to explore the submarine firsthand. In conjunction with this visit, the Indian High Commission, in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, has planned a grand event on the occasion of International Day of Yoga at Colombo Port on June 21.

President of US Joe Biden to announce over six hundred million dollar in climate investments

  • President of United States Joe Biden will announce over six hundred million dollar in climate investments to help coastal communities around the country fight climate change, a White House official said yesterday. According to the official the investments will be funded by Biden's climate and infrastructure bills and will include a 575 million dollar project to fight rising sea levels, storm surge and tidal hurricanes. It will also include a 67 million dollar investment for California to modernize its electric grid to reduce the impact of extreme weather events such as wildfires.
  • Earlier, Mr.Biden signed a 430 billion dollar bill last August that was touted as the biggest climate package in U.S. history.

UAE and Qatar Reopen Embassies to Restore Diplomatic Ties

  • The United Arab Emirates and Qatar have reopened their respective embassies in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively, as of Monday, June 19, 2023. This marks the restoration of diplomatic ties between the two countries, which had been severed in 2017.The reopening of the embassies is based on the Al-Ula agreement, which was signed by the leaders of the GCC countries in January 2021. The agreement called for the end of the Gulf rift, which had been triggered by a number of factors, including Qatar's alleged support for terrorism.
  • The reopening of the embassies is a significant step in the normalization of relations between the UAE and Qatar. It is also a boost for the GCC, which has been seeking to overcome the divisions that have plagued the region in recent years.
  • The Qatari Foreign Ministry also welcomed the reopening of the embassy, saying that it "reflects the commitment of the two countries to strengthen their bilateral relations."
  • The reopening of the embassies is a positive development for the Gulf region. It is a sign that the GCC countries are committed to resolving their differences and working together to achieve common goals.The AlUla Declaration, which was signed on January 5, 2021, marked the conclusion of the Gulf Cooperation Council summit held in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. It resolved the dispute with Qatar and called for unity and the strengthening of relations among GCC countries. The declaration  called for the restoration of diplomatic relations and the reopening of borders and airspace between Qatar and the other GCC countries, and also sought to end economic and media blockades against Qatar, emphasizing unity and cooperation. Additionally, it proposed the establishment of a joint security committee to address terrorism concerns, strengthening cooperation in areas such as economic development, security, and culture was also emphasized.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty script history by winning Men's doubles title of Indonesia Open

  • India's shuttler duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated reigning world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia to clinch the Indonesia Open Men's Double Title, in Jakarta on Sunday.
  • Satwik and Chirag, who are ranked sixth in the world, won their first Super 1000 title with a straight-set victory of 21-17, 21-18. With this feat, they become India's first ever doubles pair to win the prestigious tournament. It was also their first win over the Malaysian pair in ninth meeting.
