Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya appointed as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court

  • The appointment of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the new chief justice of Bombay High Court has been officially notified by the Central Government, while Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur has been appointed as the chief justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.
  • Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya will succeed the current Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar.

Government to face no-confidence motion in Parliament

  • A No-Confidence Motion notice has been submitted by the Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) in the Lok Sabha against PM Narendra Modi’s Government over the Manipur issue.
  • The Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) have submitted no-confidence motion notice in the Lok Sabha against the PM Modi’s Government over the Manipur issue. The notice has been accepted and the Speaker will announce the date of debate soon.

  • PM Modi’s Government which enjoys the majority of at least 332 MPs in the Lok Sabha, faces no threat from this no-confidence motion.

Phangnon Konyak becomes first woman MP from Nagaland to preside over Rajya Sabha

  • S Phangnon Konyak, a distinguished BJP leader and Nagaland’s first female Rajya Sabha MP, achieved a historic feat as she took on the role of presiding over the Rajya Sabha. This remarkable milestone in her political journey marks her as the first woman from Nagaland to assume this prestigious position.
  • S. Phangnon Konyak, an Indian politician hailing from Nagaland, holds the position of State President of BJP Mahila Morcha in her region. In a historic moment, she earned the distinction of being the first woman from Nagaland to secure a seat as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.
  • In addition to being the first female Rajya Sabha MP in April 2022, S. Phangnon Konyak achieved another groundbreaking milestone on July 17, 2023, by becoming the inaugural woman member to be appointed to the panel of vice-chairpersons.

  • Israel has recently passed Controversial Judicial Reform Bill to limit the Supreme Court’s ability to overturn the decisions made by the government ministers.
  • PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters stated that this bill was passed to rebalance powers between the branches of the government.

WHO identifies first case of MERS-CoV in UAE this year

  • According to WHO, a first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-COV) has been identified in a 28-year old male from United Arab  Emirates (UAE).
  • WHO has identified the first case of MERS-CoV in 28-year old male from United Arab Emirates (UAE). WHO stated that the patient is a resident of AI Ain city in Abu Dhabi. He had no travel history and had not come in direct or indirect contact with dromedaries (camels), goats or sheep.
  • The first case of MERS-CoV was reported in UAE in 2013. Till date, UAE has reported 94 confirmed cases and 12 deaths. Globally, the total number of cases of MERS-CoV since 2012 is 2,605 including 936 associated deaths.
  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.
  • MERS-CoV is a zoonotic virus, which is transmitted between animals and people. MERS-CoV has been identified and linked to human infections in dromedary camels in several Member States in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Human-to-Human transmission is possible and has occurred predominately among close contacts and in health-care settings. Outside the health-care settings, there has been limited human-to-human transmission.
