First meeting of G-20 Agriculture Working group begins at Indore, Madhya Pradesh

  • In Madhya Pradesh, a heritage walk was organised at the historical Rajwada Palace of Indore for delegates of the first meeting of the G20 Agriculture Working group during the first day of the three-day event.
  • Delegates were briefed about the historical importance and cultural significance of Indore during the heritage walk. Delegates also got a glimpse of India's Spirituality, History, Architecture, Nature, Arts, Food and People during the walk. Mesmerising dance performances and classical music at Krishnapura Chatri, Gopal Mandir and other landmarks also attracted the attention of the delegates. 
  • The first meeting of the G20 Agriculture Working group is being held in Indore from today, and it will continue till the 15th of February. Around a hundred delegates from G20 member countries, guest countries and International Organizations are participating in the meeting.

World Radio Day being celebrated across the globe today

  • World Radio Day is being celebrated across the globe. The day is observed every year to raise awareness among the public and the media about the importance of radio and to encourage access to information through radio.
  •  The theme for the 12th edition of World Radio Day is 'Radio and Peace'. On this occasion, a two-day Radio Festival with the theme : 'Radio for Peace and Radio for Climate Action',  is being celebrated in New Delhi. The festival, founded by a community broadcaster Archana Kapoor, is celebrated every year.

Mohammad Shahabuddin elected President of Bangladesh

  • Mohammad Shahabuddin will be the next President of Bangladesh. The Election Commission of Bangladesh issued a notification to this effect on Monday as only one candidate filed his nomination after the time of nomination and withdrawal was over.
  • A retired judge, Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission and liberation war fighter Mohammad Shahabuddin was nominated for the post by the ruling Awami League. No other party or individual filed nomination for the post.
  • The incumbent President Abdul Hamid’s tenure is coming to an end on April 23. He served as President for two consecutive terms of five years. The constitution of Bangladesh does not allow any person to hold the post of President beyond two terms.
  • Mohammad Shahabuddin was born in Pabna in 1949. He took part in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. Md. Shahabuddin was imprisoned for several years after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members on 15 August 1975. He is a member of the Awami League Advisory Council.

Cyprus: Former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides to be country's next president

  • In Cyprus, former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides to be the country's next president. Mr. Christodoulides won the tight vote over seasoned diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis.
  •  According to the official results, Mr. Christodoulides' led with nearly 52 percent of the votes, meanwhile, Mr. Mavroyiannis scored 48 percent votes. Major issues of concern for voters have been the cost of living crisis, irregular immigration and the Cyprus dispute involving the Turkish-occupied north of the island.
  • Mr. Christodoulides was expelled from the ruling DISY party after announcing his candidacy and ran as an independent. In the first round of voting last week, he was in the lead with 32.04 percent of the vote. He was appointed government spokesman in 2014 and foreign minister in 2018. Mr. Christodoulides has the support of the Democratic Party, the Movement for Social Democracy and the Democratic Alignment.

ECONOMY
India's industrial production index grows 4.3% in December 2022

  • India's Industrial Production, IIP index grew by 4.3 per cent in December 2022. As per Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data, it grew by 5.4 per cent during  April to December of the current fiscal.
  • The manufacturing sector's output grew by 2.6 per cent in December 2022, while the mining output rose by 9.8 per cent and electricity production increased by 10.4 per cent during the month. For the month of December 2022, the Quick Estimates of IIP with base 2011-12 stands at 144.7.

SCIENCE AND tECHNOLOGY
ISRO's SSLV-D2 rocket successfully places 3 satellites into their orbits

  • Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) on Friday successfully launched three satellites into their intended orbits. In its second developmental flight, the SSLV-D2 vehicle placed EOS-07, Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 satellites into their intended 450-kilometer circular orbit.
  • Department of Space, in a statement, said that it took-off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota at 09:18 AM and took about 15 minutes to inject the satellites.
  • SSLV is the new small satellite launch vehicle developed by Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, to cater the launch of small satellites up to 500 kilogram to Low Earth Orbits on ‘launch-on-demand’ basis.
  • With today’s successful launch, India has got a new launch vehicle which was aimed to commercialise the small satellite launches through Industry on demand basis. ISRO looks forward for catering to the increasing global need of launching smaller satellites into Space.

SPORTS
3rd edition of Khelo India National Winter Games underway in Gulmarg

  • In the Kashmir Valley,  the 3rd edition of Khelo India National Winter Games is underway in world famous ski resort at Gulmarg. On Sunday, the sunny weather gave respite to players and Khelo India organisers as all the events scheduled for the day were conducted smoothly at all the venues in Gulmarg and its upper reaches.
  • The sports events fixed for 3rd day of Winter Games today included Ice Stock, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Bandy Curling Bobsleighing & Skelton, Snow Shoe, Nordic, Ski Mountaineering and Alpine G Slalom,  and Cross Country.
  • During the events, a large number of spectators enthusiastically supported their favourite teams.  Winners were awarded prizes by the officers & officials of J&K Sports councils. 
  • Earlier, in Bandy event,  Gujarat registered first position, Haryana second position while Maharashtra got third position.

India beat Pakistan by 7 wickets in Women's T20 World Cup in Cape Town

  • In the Women's Cricket T20 World Cup, India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa.
  •  Chasing the target of 150 runs, India made 151 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 19 overs.  Jemimah Rodrigues top scored with unbeaten 53 runs for the winners. Shafali Verma with 33 runs and Richa Ghosh with unbeaten 31 were the other scorers. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu picked up two wickets while Sadia Iqbal took one wicket.

Indian music composer Ricky Kej creates history by winning third Grammy Award

  • Indian music composer Ricky Kej has won his third Grammy Award at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for his globally acclaimed album, Divine Tides with Rock-legend Stewart Copeland.
  •  After winning his third Grammy, Ricky Kej has created history in India by becoming the only Indian to win 3 Grammy Awards.
  • The result was announced at the live ceremony held at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles, USA today morning. Ricky's previous wins came in 2022 and 2015 for ‘Best New Age Album’ for Divine Tides and Winds of Samsara. The music album Divine Tides is a tribute to 'Vasudeva Kutumbakam - The World is one family'. The album, which contains nine songs and eight music videos, was around the world from the exquisite beauty of the Indian Himalayas to the Icy forests of Spain.
