Government to roll out satellite based GPS toll collection system on National Highways soon

  • The government is set to roll out satellite-based GPS toll collection systems on national highways.
  • The satellite-based toll systems will be implemented before the Lok Sabha election this year. Under the new system, the toll will be deducted from the bank accounts directly with the identification of the vehicle number plate.
  • The new toll collection system will help in removing the existing toll plazas and ease travel on the national highways.
  • That more than eight crore thirteen lakh fast tags have been issued to date and the average daily collection is 170 to 180 crore rupees.

Russia and China Slam US Air Strikes in Iraq and Syria at UN Security Council Meeting

  • Russia and China have slammed the United States for its recent air strikes on targets in Iraq and Syria.
  • The two countries accused Washington of raising the risk of regional escalation at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York late yesterday. Russia also asserted that the US decision to launch the attacks was linked to the upcoming presidential election.
  • China also condemned the attacks. Beijing’s ambassador Zhang Jun echoed the concern about escalating tensions.
  • The attacks followed a drone strike on a US base in Jordan that killed three American soldiers.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe inaugrates fifth session of ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka

  • The fifth session of the ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka was inaugurated by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today. Presenting the policy statement, President Wickremesinghe announced key economic highlights of his government. The president unveiled plans for economic revival which included a Debt restructuring strategy in the first six months of the year.
  • Wickremasinghe outlined the positives for the island nation and added that tourism and industry were taking a positive turn. Plans were outlined to reduce the tax burden as economic reforms continue to stabilize the economy, while also revising the VAT percentage to further support economic growth. The President expressed optimism about achieving economic growth of 2% to 3% this year with scope for further increase in years to come.
  • Sri Lanka is in the process of reviving its economy after it faced its worst-ever economic crisis over the last two years. India has been a crucial support through assistance of over 4 billion dollars and financing assurances to the IMF.

PM of Guyana Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi on six-day visit to India

  • Prime Minister of Guyana Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi yesterday evening on a six-day visit to India.
  • He will meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
  •  External Affairs Ministry said in a release that the visit will further strengthen the multifaceted relationship and unique people-to-people linkages that India and Guyana share.

  • In the 75th International Boxing Tournament, STRANDJA 2024, Indian boxers Sachin and Sagar entered the quarter-finals last evening. On the third day of the tournament, Sachin registered a 3-2 win over Uzbekistan’s Fayzov Khudoynazar, while Sagar defeated Lithuania’s Jazeviciius Jonas in a one-sided match by 5-0.
  • India's Amit will face Ukraine's Maksym Rudyk in the Men's 51 kg category, Akash will face French boxer Makan Traore in the Men's 71 kg category and Abhimanyu Loura will face another French boxer Raphael Monny in Men's 80 kg category.
