Centre issues advisory to states on Tomato Flu

  • The Centre has issued an advisory to states on Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), commonly known as Tomato Flu. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Tomato Flu was first identified in the Kollam district of Kerala on May 6 and as of July 26, more than 82 children younger than 5 years with the infection have been reported by the local government hospitals.
  • The other affected areas of Kerala are Anchal, Aryankavu, and Neduvathur. This endemic viral illness triggered an alert in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
  • Additionally, 26 children (aged between 1-9 years) have been reported as having the disease in Odisha by the Regional Medical Research Centre in Bhubaneswar. To date, apart from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Odisha, no other regions in India have reported the disease in their State and Union Territories by the virus.
  • HFMD is characterized by fever, sores in the mouth, and a skin rash. It begins with mild fever, poor appetite, malaise, and often a sore throat.

Rajesh Verma named as Secretary to President DroupadiMurmu

  • Odisha cadre 1987-batch IAS officer, Rajesh Verma has been appointed as the Secretary to President DroupadiMurmu. He replaces the incumbent KapilDevTripathi, a 1980-batch IAS officer. He is currently serving as Secretary of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs & has also served as principal secretary to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik. In the past, Verma has also served as the Principal Secretary to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Principal Secretary of Energy Department, Government of Odisha.
  • DroupadiMurmu became the 15th President of India after Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana administered the oath of office last month. With this, she became the second woman President of the country, and the first-ever tribal woman to hold the highest Constitutional office and also happens to be the first President to be born in independent India. Murmu received around 64 per cent of the valid votes of MPs and MLAs comprising the Electoral College. Murmu received 6,76,803 votes whereas Sinha secured 3,80,177 votes.

Mali military appoints Colonel AbdoulayeMaiga as interim PM

  • In Mali, the military has appointed a Colonel AbdoulayeMaiga as interim Prime Minister after the country's civilian Prime Minister ChoguelKokallaMaiga was admitted to hospital. Before this appointment, Colonel Maiga was working as a Government Spokesman and Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation.
  • As per the media reports, his appointment was announced in a decree read on state television late on Sunday. He replaces the veteran civilian politician ChoguelKokallaMaiga, who was named premier after the military took power in August 2020 and carried out a second coup in May 2021.  In recent months, Maiga had come under criticism from many of his former allies for following the Junta's line. Military Junta leader Colonel AssimiGoita had himself appointed transitional president after the May 2021 coup.

VikramDoraiswami appointed to UK as India’s High Commissioner

  • Vikram K. Doraiswami, a seasoned diplomat appointed as India’s new High Commissioner to the United Kingdom which is seen as a significant position given the two nations’ expanding strategic alliance. Vikram K. Doraiswami is Indian High Commissioner  to Bangladesh currently. He is an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1992 batch. At May 1994, Vikram K. Doraiswami was appointed Third Secretary in the Indian High Commission in Hong Kong after completing his in-service training in New Delhi between 1992 and 1993.
  • When Vikram K. Doraiswami took office as Bangladesh’s ambassador to India in October 2020, relations between the two countries significantly expanded.
  • GaitriIssar Kumar, the high commissioner to the United Kingdom, left her position on June 30.

DRDO And Indian Navy Test Indigenous VL-SRSAM Missile

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully flight-tested the indigenously designed and developed Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The flight test was carried out from a naval ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability.
