Longte Festival Celebrated by Arunachal Pradesh’s Nyishi Tribe

  • The Nyishi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh enthusiastically celebrates the Longte festival, one of their biggest cultural events. Unlike many other tribal festivals, Longte prohibits the sacrifice of animals, instead adorning altars with decorative white feathers and bamboo decorations.
  • The Longte festival is a significant cultural event for the Nyishi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. It is marked by its unique tradition of abstaining from animal sacrifice, opting instead for symbolic decorations using feathers and bamboo.
  • As the largest ethnic group in Arunachal Pradesh, the Nyishi community boasts a rich cultural heritage. They are known for their agricultural practices, particularly Jhoom cultivation, and their traditional longhouses called Namlo.

First Trilateral Summit Meeting of US, Japan, and Philippines

  • American President Joe Biden hosted the inaugural trilateral summit among the United States, Japan, and the Philippines on April 11, 2024, at the White House in Washington D.C. The meeting underscored the commitment of the United States to support its allies, Japan and the Philippines, amid escalating territorial disputes with China.
  • Prior to the summit, the maritime forces of the Philippines, Japan, the United States, and Australia conducted a joint maritime exercise named Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone on April 7, 2024, in response to Chinese harassment allegations by the Philippines.
  • Both the Senkaku Islands and the Second Thomas Shoal lie within the South China Sea, a region vital for trade and potentially rich in oil and gas reserves. China’s expansive claims in the area have sparked conflicts with multiple neighboring countries.

Kristalina Georgieva Re-appointed as IMF Managing Director

  • Kristalina Georgieva has been re-appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a new 5-year term starting on 1 October 2024. She was the sole candidate nominated for the position this year, and her appointment was made by the IMF executive board.
  • The Board of Governors is the highest decision-making body of the IMF, consisting of one governor and one alternate governor from each member country. The Executive Board, with 24 Directors elected by member countries or groups of countries, handles the IMF’s day-to-day business. The Managing Director serves as the chairman of the Executive Board.

Russia’s Successful Angara-A5 Rocket Test Launch

  • Russia successfully tested its Angara-A5 space rocket for the first time on April 11, 2024. The test launch was conducted from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Far East of Russia. In fact, rocket test launches on April 9 and 10 were cancelled due to a malfunction in the pressurization system and a problem with the engine launch-control system.
  • The Angara-A5 rocket reached an altitude of more than 25,000 kilometers (15,500 miles) per hour within minutes of launch.
  • The Angara-A5 is a three-stage rocket that stands 54.5 meters (178.81 feet) tall and weighs about 773 tons, with a payload capacity of 24.5 tons.
  • The Angara-A5 is designed to replace Russia’s Proton launcher and maintain Russia’s access to space after the expiration of the lease on the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in 2050.
  • Russia launched the Angara project in 1991, shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, to develop a domestically produced launch vehicle.
  • The first Angara-A5 test flight took place in 2014, and a second test was conducted in 2020 from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia.
  • A partial test of the Angara project in 2021 was unsuccessful.
