Human rights activist Narges Mohammadi gets the Nobel Prize 2023!

Narges Mohammadi was announced the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 winner “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”. She was born on 21 April 1972 in Zanjan, Iran.

Narges Mohammadi is an Iranian human rights activist and the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi. She has advocated for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran, as well as for prisoners' rights. As a direct result of her human rights work, she has been imprisoned on several occasions.

In 2022, Mohammadi was named in the BBC 100 Women list, which celebrates the achievements of influential women from around the world.

In 2022, Ales Bialiatski, Memorial, and Center for Civil Liberties received the Nobel Peace Prize. They represent civil society in their home countries. They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens. They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrated the significance of civil society for peace and democracy.
