UGC extends deadline for submission of application for CUET till May 31 for UG admissions

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended the last date for submission of application for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) till 31st of May for admission to various undergraduate programmes.
  •  In a tweet, UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar said, the decision was taken in view of the representations received from the students for providng them opportunity to submit their online application.
  • Students can submit their applications till 31st of this month. Earlier, the last date was 22nd of May. The three-and-half-hour computer-based entrance test will be conducted in two shifts. The CUET is compulsory for all 45 central universities funded by University Grants Commission.

PM Narendra Modi, HM Amit Shah pays tributes to Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary

  • 28th May is the birth anniversary of great nationalist and freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly called Veer Savarkar.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to great revolutionary leader and social reformer on the occasion. The Prime Minister also shared a video message on the social media platform on the occasion.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tributes to Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary. In a series of tweets, Mr. Shah said, Savarkar was the epitome of sacrifice and tenacity.
  • He said, Veer Savarkar was given two life terms of imprisonment but the inhuman tortures in dungeon could not deter his resolve to return the ultimate glory of Mother Bharati. The Home Minister said, Veer Savarkar's unparalleled contribution to the freedom movement and his efforts to remove social evil of untouchability from the society can never be forgotten.

Government launches Indian Business Portal to help Indian exporters get global visibility

  • Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel launched the Indian Business Portal in New Delhi.
  • The portal will serve as an international trade hub for Indian exporters and foreign buyers.
  • The portal is a business to business digital marketplace to empower small medium enterprises exporters, artisans and farmers to identify new markets for their products and grow their sales globally.
  • Speaking after launching the portal, Ms Patel said, the portal will act as e-commerce marketplace to help Indian exporters get global visibility. She said, it will address a number of elements which are part of the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a commitment of the government like digitizing exporters, supporting MSME and encouraging greater exports of Indian products. The Minister said, various e-commerce platforms showed immense potential in supporting millions of businesses to sustain themselves, despite the challenging time of Covid-19 pandemic.
  • As per the reports the Indian Business Portal has been developed by Federation of Indian Export Organizations to provide Indian Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) exporters, artisans and farmers, and foreign buyers a business to business marketplace on a single digital window.

Ukraine needs to face reality and talk to Russia: Zelenskyy

  • Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy has said Ukraine was not eager to talk to Russia's Vladimir Putin but that it has to face the reality that this will likely be necessary to end the war.
  • He said this during an address to an Indonesian think tank. Zelenskyy said that there are things to discuss with the Russian leader.
  •  He said he is not telling that his people are eager to talk to the Russian leader, but Ukraine has to face the realities of what they are living through.   He said they want to reclaim the life of a sovereign country within its own territory. He added that Russia did not appear to be ready yet for serious peace talks.

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett calls for thorough & independent probe of recent terror attacks in Afghanistan

  • UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett has called for a thorough and independent investigation of recent terror attacks in Afghanistan that have resulted in the killing of dozens of people.
  • In a tweet, Mr. Bennett said, he is alarmed by continuing terror attacks on civilians, including 16 child casualties in Afghanistan.
  • The country had been hit by a series of bomb attacks launched by the Islamic State group opposing the Taliban regime. In Wednesday's blasts, at least five worshippers were killed and 17 others wounded in Kabul after a blast ripped through a mosque during evening prayers. The blast occurred when people were offering prayers in Hazrat-e-Zekria Mosque.
  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the recent attacks and extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
  • UN chief reiterated his call on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians, including ethnic and religious minorities, as well as their right to freely practice their religion.

India to take on Japan in first match of Super four stage of Men's Hockey Asia Cup

  • In the Men's Asia Cup Hockey tournament, India will take on Japan in their first match of Super-Four stage at the GBK Sports Complex Hockey Stadium at Jakarta in Indonesia.
  •  The match will begin at 5 PM (Indian time). India qualified for the Super-Four round with a huge 16-0 win over hosts Indonesia on Thursday. Japan defeated Pakistan 3-2 in the other crucial group match. With the win Japan joined Malaysia and Sourth Korea as the three teams to qualify for the Men's Hockey World Cup to be held in India next year. As the host nation India, who thrashed Indonesia 16-0 in a pool match had already qualified for the World Cup.
  • In Super Four stage of the Asia Cup, the four teams will play each other once. The top two teams will then play the final.
  • In other Super 4 stage match, South Korea will take on Malaysia at 2:30 PM (Indian Time).

12th Hockey India Junior Men's National C'ship: Uttar Pradesh to take on Chandigarh in title clash on May 29

  • In the 12th Hockey India Junior Men's National Championship, Uttar Pradesh will take on Chandigarh in the title clash on May 29th evening. The match will begin at Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu on 7.30 P.M.
  • In the semi finals, Uttar Pradesh defeated Haryana by two goals to one, while Chandigarh beat Odisha by three to one in penalty shoot- out, after both the sides equalled with two goals each in the stipulated time.
  • Prior to the match between Odisha and Haryana for 3rd and 4th place will also be played.
