Action Plan is the need of hour for online education for EWS
The Supreme Court has said that online education is not available to the children of the economically backward sections (EWS) and the downtrodden in the country and as a result they are suffering a lot. In this context, it directed the Central and State Governments on Friday to come up with a realistic action plan to ensure strict implementation of the Right to Education Act (RTE). On September 18, 2020, the Delhi High Court directed public and private schools to provide equipment (smart phones or laptops) and internet facilities to poor students so that they can listen to online classes.
The Accredited Non-Aided Private Schools Action Committee has approached the Supreme Court challenging the ruling. A bench of the apex court comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Beevi Nagaratna heard the case. Article 21 of the Constitution makes it clear that online education for children from poor, downtrodden communities should not be denied. If they do not get online education, they are at risk of falling behind the children of affluent families and the gap between the two communities is widening. The apex court bench congratulated the Delhi High Court for giving a good verdict.
