TGPSC Group-1 Mains 2024: Candidates' Petitions in High Court and Supreme Court

The controversy surrounding the Group-1 exam in Telangana has escalated with candidates filing petitions in both the High Court and Supreme Court.

On Friday, a group of three Group-1 candidates approached the High Court Division Bench, challenging the Single Bench's earlier decision to allow the Mains exam to proceed. They argued that the Single Bench's verdict had cast doubts on the fairness and transparency of the exam.

Meanwhile, Telangana Group-1 candidate P. Rambabu has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, contesting the decision to conduct the Mains exam without applying the Rule of Reservation from the prelims stage. He contended that this would unfairly disadvantage SC, ST, and BC merit students who qualified under the open category. With the Mains exam scheduled for October 21, Rambabu has requested an expedited hearing of his case. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has presented the matter before the Chief Justice's bench, urging for a swift resolution to avoid further delays and ensure fairness to the candidates.

Protests

The Telangana High Court's earlier decision had paved the way for the Group-1 Mains exams to proceed, with 31,382 candidates qualifying. However, the recent petitions have introduced uncertainty into the exam schedule. In a display of discontent, several candidates staged a protest in Hyderabad on Thursday, demanding the postponement of the Mains exam and the cancellation of GO 29. They gathered at a park near Canara Bank in Gandhinagar, raising slogans and displaying placards. Tensions escalated briefly as police attempted to disperse the crowd.

The candidates questioned the government's decision to allow 34,000 candidates to take the Mains exam when only 31,000 had qualified in the prelims. They insisted that the exams should be conducted only after all legal issues related to Group-1 are resolved. The outcome of these legal challenges will significantly impact the fate of the Group-1 Mains exams in Telangana.
