Emerged Victorious Against all Odds: A Sreenivasulu, IES All India 3rd Ranker
An average student from village background , primary education only in government schools and intermediate in Telugu medium, a number of failures in engineering job trials, yet, didn’t lose hope…, Avuluri Sreenivasulu from Prakasham district secured third rank in Indian Engineering Services(IES) at all India level.
Here is his success story that shows how he cracked the IES Exam.
Academic and Family Background
I am from Nagarajukunta of Konakanametla mandal of Prakashham district. My father Avuluri Pulla Reddy is a farmer and mother Venkata Lakshmi is a home-maker. Elder brother Ramana Reddy is an accountant in a private firm and younger brother Venketeswarlu is doing CA. Almost my education was carried in Prakasham District. I studied up to seventh standard, in local government school and tenth in Vivekananda High School in Podili and graduated from Prakasham Engineering College.
I secured 482 marks in tenth. 938 marks in Intermediate and 18500 rank in EAMCET.
The craze for IES
I completed engineering graduation with 80 percentile (2012). As far as education is concerned, our college is okay, but there was no scope for skill development, which resulted in failure in getting a job that is when I decided to get a government job and started preparing for GATE at Hyderabad. I came to know about IES for the first time and the craze about IES, where syllabus is similar to that of GATE’s, prompted me to prepare for the exam.
Got frustrated by continuous failures
Attended for written tests with interviews at ISRO, BARC, Air force Authority, NPSL etc, but didn’t get through. In 2015, I attended IES interview but, failed there too. Attempted once again in 2016 and failed. I was very much frustrated. I got qualified in GATE but failed to get a job. Later, secured 336th rank in GATE and got job as a junior telecom officer in BSNL recently. While I was about to in join it, I got selected in my long cherished IES Exam with a third rank at national level in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department.
Junior Research Fellow in DRDO
In 2014, I joined as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF), in the DRDL lab of DRDO. I used to attend the coaching classes for IES in the evening and in weekends and during holidays dedicated myself completely for studies. Whenever I get time, I used to study.
Resigned Job for Preparation
Past failures and change in the syllabus made me little uninterested to prepare for IES for the present attempt. Thereby, preparation was very normal for prelims. But for mains I decided to resign for the job and put full effort on it. Unbelievably, I got third rank at all India level. There are 50 posts in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department. Out of 350 members who attempted for mains, 130 were called for interviews. And, finally, 48 were selected.
Interview in technical aspects
I was interviewed by a panel of four members. It was totally about technical aspects based on my work experience in DRDO. They asked me about mobile generations (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) Bluetooth, WiFi, its range and distance etc. Interview was about 20-25 minutes.
Command on English language
It became difficult to understand lessons in English, during my engineering, as I studied in Telugu medium up to intermediate. My job at DRDO is the turning point. Most of the colleagues are Hindi speaking. As I don’t have Hindi knowledge, I had to speak in English with them. Slowly, I got accustomed to English. My colleagues used to correct my mistakes if I do any. The English that I learnt helped me a lot in IES mains and personality tests. Telugu medium students should get command on English as it is necessary in every phase.
My preference in IES
I put Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers post as my first preference in the application and was expecting the same.
Advice to the Aspirants
The changed syllabus reduced the General Studies topics and importance is given to engineering aspects. Practice as many mock tests as possible. One, who can’t afford for coaching, can write test series to get acquainted with the exam pattern. Formulae and concepts will be revised automatically with the mock tests. Have to note down the mistakes and get them corrected. Going through the previous papers will give you an idea of examination pattern and topics, concepts, which are regularly touched.
Aspirants who can’t afford for coaching can get a lot of online sources. They can watch lectures of IIT professors, on NPTEL. Along with this, one can find a number of GATE related videos on YouTube.
Don’t get frustrated with failures. I strived years together to get success. Work hard to get success in IES and GATE etc.
