SJVN and IIT Patna Partner to Reduce Tunnel Project Delays and Costs

SJVN Limited (SJVN), a hydropower company, has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna) to develop advanced techniques for their tunneling projects. This collaboration aims to significantly decrease time and cost overruns that often plague such endeavors.

A Focus on Proactive Risk Management:

A key aspect of the partnership is the development of predictive analytics algorithms. These algorithms will analyze various geotechnical data sources, including geological surveys, borehole information, geophysical measurements, and monitoring data from past SJVN projects. By leveraging this integrated data, the algorithms will forecast potential risks and provide early warning systems specifically designed for tunneling projects. These proactive measures are expected to substantially reduce time and cost overruns during construction.

Harnessing Data for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency:

SJVN's Chairperson & Managing Director, Smt. Geeta Kapur, emphasized the importance of developing cutting-edge methodologies that integrate diverse geotechnical data sources. This collaboration will specifically focus on:

Evaluating the complex relationship between overburden (weight of the earth above a tunnel) and deformation (changes in the tunnel's shape).
Utilizing this knowledge to improve the design and selection of support systems crucial for tunnel stability.
By combining integrated geotechnical data with 3D geological models, SJVN and IIT Patna aim to effectively identify and analyze potential risks and hazards before they arise.
