Celebrate Humanity: World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

Celebrate Humanity World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Theme 2024: "I give with joy, and the joy I give is a reward"

Every year on May 8th, we celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a day dedicated to honoring the lifesaving work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This date holds special significance as it marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the movement, born in 1828.

Honoring the Legacy of Henry Dunant
Dunant, a Swiss businessman, witnessed the horrific aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859. Inspired by the suffering, he dedicated himself to providing neutral humanitarian aid during wartime. His vision led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The ICRC, currently led by Director-General Yves Daccord, continues to be a driving force in international humanitarian efforts.

A Day of Recognition
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day serves as a global day of recognition for the tireless efforts of millions of volunteers and staff who strive to alleviate suffering around the world.  This year's theme, "I give with joy, and the joy I give is a reward," beautifully captures the spirit of volunteerism and the profound impact it has on both those who receive aid and those who give it.
