What is special about Exercise Malabar 2020?

Exercise Malabar 2020 is the quadrilateral naval exercise involving the India, United States, Japan and Australia. Originally begun in 1992, the 24th edition of Malabar exercise is in two phases, Phase-I is from 3 to 6 November near the coast of Visakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal and the Phase-II is from 17 to 20 November in the Arabian Sea.

Malabar 2020 is a "non-contact, at sea only" exercise taking into consideration COVID-19 pandemic.

With Australia's participation in the drills in 2020, it will be the first time in 13 years that all members of the regional grouping known as the Quad will be engaging militarily. It was decided that Australia shall also be a part of the Malabar Naval exercise, in view to support a free, open and rule based Indo Pacific.

Conducting the exercises-war games- in Arabian Sea is a message to China whose Indian Ocean presence is increasing to the detriment of the nations in the region.

As the standoff in eastern Ladakh continues, the participation of four large navies from the Indo-Pacific region will send a message to China.

Career Guidance Malabar 2020 will go a long way to bring the quad countries together.
