Apart from jobs in private companies, there are several Govt. jobs on offer for engineering graduates. They are as follows
Engineering Services Examination:
Union Public Service Commission will be holding the Engineering Service Examination 2013 to fill up the GROUP A category posts like Assistant Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers in different departments at national level. Students with degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics & Communications, Civil, Mechanical) or equivalent degree from recognized universities are eligible to take the exam
The Engineering services examination is conducted in the specializations of Electronics and Telecommunication Electrical and Electronics Engineering Mechanical Engineering Civil Engineering
Selected candidates are posted in the Department of Railways, Central water, Central Engineering, Military Engineering, Department of Telecom, Indian Ordnance Factories, Geological Survey of India and many others.
If you are economically efficient and don’t need a job, it is better you go for your further studies. A specialization will always earn you more salary as well as priority during interviews and of course sound grip over subject.
Exam Pattern: Candidates are tested in two phases - Written test (1000 marks) and Personal Interview (200 marks)
Written Test consists of 5 papers.
Paper - I (Objective – 200 marks): Part - A General English (100 Marks), Part - B General Studies (100 Marks)
Paper II & III (Objective): Electronics & Communication or Electrical or Mechanical or Civil Engineering. Every paper contains 120 questions having 200 marks.
Paper IV and V (Conventional papers): In any one of the above mentioned Engineering specialization. Each paper is of 200 marks.
Preparation plan:
Last ten years previous papers: Previous papers for the last ten years can give you an insight into the nature of questions. Solving old papers can really be helpful for the preparation of this exam. Reading News papers like The Hindu, Times of India every day and making notes on important events and news can be handy to tackle this section.

Apart from Engineering Services and PSU jobs through GATE, the following jobs are available for engineers in Govt. sector
- Civil Services Examination: Most of the engineers at present are tilted towards civil services. It is conducted by UPSC for recruitment of individuals in various 24 services like IAS, IFS, IRS, IPS etc.
- Indian Forest Service Examination: This exam is conducted by UPSC for recruitment in Indian Forest Service.
- Section Engineer jobs in Indian Railways: Different branches are Section Engineer - Mechanical / Automobile Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering
- Bank Jobs: Any graduate is eligible for Bank PO or clerical posts. This is considered one of the most preferred jobs in India.
- APPSC: Various engineering jobs in AP like Assistant Engineers, Lecturers in Polytechnic Colleges, Asst Executive Engineers are recruited through APPSC exams in AP Engineering Research Laboratories, Rural Water Supply Engineering Subordinate Service, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Rural Water Supply Engineering Subordinate Service, Public Health and Municipal Engineering Sub- Ordinate Service etc.
- SSC: Junior Engineers are recruited through Staff Selection Commission in some of the Govt. organizations like Central Water Commission, Dept. of Posts etc.
