How to plan your career?
Sakshi Education
Research suggests that many students take the easy way out and either depend heavily on their parents and teachers to make their academic decision, or get swayed by attractive, persuasive, paid-for advertising by educational institutions.
Involve parents:
The great thing about parents is that they have had diverse experiences plus they may have hopefully learnt from their mistakes. In addition, the exposure they have to different careers is sometimes far greater than yours. All that can be a huge asset because at 20 you have a person at age 50 on your side. Parents also have the additional benefit of knowing you intimately. But while parents put some excellent resources like knowledge and wisdom on the table, sometimes they curtail choice and self-determination by lack of willingness to take a chance on unique abilities and skill set of the student.
Ask yourself:
Do I want a career for the past or the future? Read newspapers and magazines to build your database about future trends. If gas emissions and carbon footprints are being discussed the world over, don't wait for the jobs to be advertised. Do an environment course, now.
Advertisers:
Let's look at another big career influence - advertisements. About 45 percent go by advertisements and publicity around an institution to make up their mind. But remember that they are designed to influence the purchasing behavior of the consumer, in this case the student’s family. By definition it is a paid medium whether it comes as an advertorial or an advertisement. As such it needs to be viewed as a marketing device with all its hyperboles. The ranking statistics that the adverts quote can sometimes also be 'fixed'. Just like the clichéd glass that can be half full or half empty, ranking can be used to prove any point. Advertisements can be a useful means of gathering information about diverse courses. But just as eating a dozen low calorie cookies will not make you slim; adverts need not deliver a 100 percent of what you are looking for.
Knowledge is power:
Good research is a key to successful planning. The excellent range of courses in government universities should not be ignored just because they don’t advertise. But is career planning only about where to do a certain course? Is there not a more vital question to be answered? That is, how best should you integrate your strengths, special skills and interests with the growing needs of the economy? One of the major ingredients in the decision-making is your own self, your abilities, capabilities, interests, aptitude and passion. These are the things that make you unique.
Government jobs:
Although government jobs in India are not the best paying and the government is not considered to be the best paymaster, the other things make up for it. The job security, training opportunities and perks compensate for not being a high paymaster. Although, after the pay commission the scales have been revised substantially and people employed by the government does make a substantial amount. On top of the rung of the ladder for government jobs are IAS, IPS and IFS officers. They not only command a high take home salary but also exclusive perks and unforeseen amounts of respect in society. After them you have Income tax commissioners who are paid really well to be able to get the coffers of the government filled by catching income tax offenders.
Army:
There are also the jobs in the armed forces which not only pay you well enough but look after you and your family for a lifetime. There are also jobs in the aviation sector such as Air India and Indian Airlines which are well paying and offers one a good lifestyle. Next in line are the software engineers and developers who work to ensure that the IT and software is working. After them are the Civil Engineers who undertake and oversee all the government related tasks.

- Besides these you have the jobs in Universities and the renowned institutes such as the IIMs and IITs. These jobs are not very taxing and at the same time get you a fair amount of money.
- Next in line are the Personal Assistants who take home a neat pay package although they are working for the government sector.
- After them you have the office clerks, data entry operators, and stenographers.
- There are other government jobs that pay really well and especially now with the implementation of the sixth pay commission the salaries are almost on par with the private sector jobs.
- If you are interested in the Oil and Gas sector then you can join the Hindustan Petroleum or ONGC. The pay scales are quite enviable in this job.
- There are several jobs in the University Grants and this gives you a chance to pursue a doctorate degree whilst you are working and also earn simultaneously.
- Another government sector job is in the Port trusts. This is one sector that has no competition as such and the work is interesting too.
- The government sector also deals with telecommunication and there are lots of jobs in this industry too. The industry is booming because of the advent and coverage of mobile phones and the growing need of the internet to be connected. People in their work and personal lives need these communication means and in order to get a piece of this pie the government is willing to pay good money to get quality employees.
- Therefore, if you notice, the government is not such a bad paymaster as it offers many well paying jobs up for grab.
