College life:
The 4 years that I spent at OU were memorable days of my life. Engineering student life is about not only studies but also a lot more. Plentiful of events, technical symposiums, celebrations, mini tours and what not. It taught me the essence of life. It gave me the most wonderful friends with whom you spend most of the time. All the professors, lecturers were supportive and guided us well giving us many suggestions through their experience.

My family inspired me
Inspiration doesn’t come only from great people who have a good name and are recognized in the society. Inspiration may come even from the people around you. For me, my family is the inspiration and strength, which has guided me, encouraged me, and strove me up all the time.

Can you describe us in detail how you faced the campus interview right from the written test to facing the interview board?
I had to go through a written test followed by a group activity, 2 technical interviews and a HR
interview for recruitment in Morgan Stanley. Written test tests your basic level of understanding about various concepts in computer science field and the speed. The group activity was a good experience which tested our leadership qualities, the ability to convince, the logical reason behind the solution and the communication skills. Technical interviews were a bit tough where they tested the in-depth knowledge, logic behind the solutions, optimality behind the solutions, confidence on what we answer and real time understanding of problems. Good state of mind is very important during the interviews. Finally, I had my HR interview conducted by one of the heads. Many puzzles, personal information and few technical questions were asked. Overall, it was a very nice experience.

What do you think that fetched the job in the Campus placement?
Resume plays a major role during placements. I did a couple of projects through which I could show them what I have learnt and how I implemented them. I believe in smart work rather than the hard work; of course, both are important but weightage to them matters. Based on each company’s profile, I trained myself with the respective areas thoroughly. Finally, most important is your attitude in front of the interviewer where I showed my confidence and interest in the job.

How many offers did you get and which was your choice?
I got offers from Morgan Stanley-Mumbai and MAQ software-Hyderabad. I would preferably join Morgan Stanley.

Which books and material did you refer for your preparation?
I mostly followed complete reference books for various languages.

When did you start preparing for the placement?
Our Placement Season started in 4th year,1st semester. My preparation started after 3rd year-2nd sem.

What suggestion would you like to give for job aspirants?
Be competitive, develop and master the skills required for the interviews, and overcome the fear. Sometimes even if you are not that good technically, your smartness can fetch you a winning edge. Remember that if you have a good start to your career, you can easily have an increasing curve in your life. Never get depressed at any point of time; there are many opportunities which are waiting for you. Just learn from the experiences. If today you do not get what you want, then you get to learn which mistakes are not to be done the next time. Ultimately, if your goals are strong, success would be yours.

What parameters did you keep in mind while selecting a College or a branch?
Before you think about that, ask yourself about the long-term goals - wheher you want to pursue further studies or get a job and join a company. If further study is your option then you can join any college. Keep in mind the distance of the college from your residence as you may wish to take coaching for the further studies and thus you can balance both of them. If getting a job is your goal, then you need to be careful in choosing the right college with the right branch. Make a study on the list of top colleges and keep in mind to choose one of the top colleges as the companies wanting to recruit students would visit only the top colleges. I personally chose to join Osmania University as it stands top in the state and the records of placements are very good and am very happy with my choice. For choosing a branch, if you aim to earn high salaries then Computer Science is the first choice and it’s even easy to jump between multiple companies easily with a good growth.

Branch is an important issue which decides the career of the student. How did you decide upon the branch selection?
Personally speaking, you can be a little lenient in choosing a branch. In all the fields, you will find good growth. Don’t look at the situation immediately after engineering. In the initial days, you might not get what you wanted. However, with experience you’ll go miles ahead. So, go according to your interests and don’t choose a branch under pressure. I personally had interest in computers and logical solutions so I chose CSE.

What do you suggest to a student and why: A seat in a good college or a good branch in a normal college?
My suggestion would be to get a seat in good college. Some of the students would be given a chance to shift to other branches based on performance. In job's point of view, most of the MNCs choose good colleges for the recruitment purpose.

Branch matters up to some extent as many companies visiting the campuses are software companies, but they open the placement opportunities for almost all the branches (mostly ECE and EEE) as the companies look for people who are fast and innovative with some knowledge in computer science field too. Companies train the students anyway after selections.

Can you suggest the Engineering branches, which are in demand with respect to the present job trend?
Currently the order according to me is CSE followed by ECE followed by EEE/Mech followed by Civil

What do you think is best for a fresh engineer - to pursue MBA or to opt for a job?
It depends on one's personal interest. I would personally suggest opting for a job; getting some work experience and then if interested pursue MBA because to get a seat in MBA institutes, experience is one the criteria.

How do the students know if a particular branch interests him/her or not?
This purely depends on one's interest. If you are good in memorizing things and remembering them well and if you would like to play around various circuits and all then opt for ECE/EEE. If you hate remembering things and if you are good at building good Logics, showing your smartness, opt for CSE. If you have passion for designing, various automobiles, choose Mechanical and if you have an art of building and understanding and capable to visualize various structures opt for Civil.

What skills should students develop during their four years to have a bright career?
During interviews, the most important aspects which the interviewer looks in you would be things like confidence, ability to express/convince, your logical ability, smartness, quickness etc. So, during your course make yourself stronger in all the fields. Participate in events to get out of stage fears, organize events so that you can learn to be expressive and build leadership qualities. Of course, subject knowledge is also very important; so maintain good academics too.

Keeping in view of the physical strain, which Engineering branches are suitable for girls?
You never feel stressed out in engineering life as you balance your life with studies, extracurricular activities which will relax you, chill out with friends and so on. As an advice- if you are not strong enough in handling machines or doing site works better, don’t choose branches like Mech/Civil.

Your advice to the engineering aspirants…
Before you make a choice do sit and have a detailed study of the current situation in the world. Once you choose your path, you won’t have a chance to change your career path as these four years of journey would form a base for your future professional life. All the best!
