- On Friday, the Indian government issued a seven-day ultimatum to social media platforms, instructing them to align their policies with Indian regulations to combat the dissemination of deepfakes on their platforms.
- Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized that deepfakes fall under the purview of the existing IT Rules, particularly Rule 3(1)(b). This rule mandates the removal of 12 categories of content within 24 hours of receiving user complaints. Chandrasekhar stated that 100% of such violations under the IT Rules would face governmental action in the future.
- Platforms are required to promptly remove deepfake content within 24 hours upon receipt of a report from either a user or a government authority. Failure to comply with this obligation invokes Rule 7, empowering aggrieved individuals to take legal action against platforms under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Chandrasekhar explained.
- For individuals impacted by deepfakes, Chandrasekhar urged them to file First Information Reports (FIRs) at their nearest police station. The IT Ministry is committed to assisting aggrieved users in filing FIRs related to deepfakes.
- Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that India is considering regulations to curb the proliferation of deepfakes and address potential harm caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Following discussions with representatives from major social media platforms and stakeholders, Vaishnaw stated that new rules would be drafted to detect and limit the spread of deepfakes. Additionally, the forthcoming regulations aim to enhance the reporting process for such deepfake videos.
