Adani Green commissioned world’s largest wind-solar power plant

  • Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has commissioned the world’s largest wind-solar power plant of 600 MV capacity in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The plant has a power purchase agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) at Rs 2.69/kWh for 25 years.
  • The project consists of 600 MW solar-wind plants.
  • In May 2022, AGEL operationalized India’s first hybrid power plant with a capacity of 390 MW in Jaisalmer.
  • The commencement of the 600 MW plant AGEL has a total operational generation capacity of 6.7 GW.
  • This includes an operational hydropower generation capacity of 1 GW, the largest in the world.
  • AGEL’s total renewable portfolio goes up to 20.4 GW to reach its vision of 45 GW capacity by 2030.

US to soon deliver four more advanced rocket systems to Ukraine for military operation with Russia

  • The United States will soon deliver to Ukraine four more of the advanced rocket systems credited with helping the country’s military gain momentum in its military operation with Russia.
  • The High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, will be part of a new 625 million dollar package of aid expected to be announced on Tuesday, according to U.S. officials.
  • The decision marks the first time the US has sent more HIMARS to Ukraine since late July, and it will bring the total number delivered so far to 20. The systems have become a key tool in Ukraine’s ability to strike bridges that Russia has used to supply its troops, enabling Ukrainian forces to make inroads in Russia-controlled regions.
  • The US in recent weeks also provided funding through a separate program - the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative - so another 18 HIMARS can be purchased through longer-term contracts.

ECONOMY
India’s Economic growth to Decline to 5.7% in 2022: UNCTAD report

  • India’s economic growth is expected to decline to 5.7 per cent this year from 8.2 per cent in 2021, citing higher financing cost and weaker public expenditures, according to the forecast by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Trade and Development Report 2022.
  • UNCTAD projects that the US economy will grow at 1.9 percent in 2022, a decline from 5.7 percent in 2021, and will further slow down to 0.9 percent in 2023. Meanwhile, China’s economic growth is projected to be 3.9 percent in 2022, a decline from 8.1 percent in 2021, and a 5.3 percent growth next year. The report added that the share of commodities in China’s and Egypt’s imports is 38 percent, and more than 50 percent of India’s imports are (primary) commodities including food and fuel. As a result, higher commodity prices have a strong impact on domestic prices via imports. Recent estimates covering the past five decades suggest a 50 percent increase in oil prices (approximately the increase in 2021) is associated with an increase in inflation of between 3.5 and 4.4 percentage points, with a lag of about two years.

WTO Forecast A Slowdown Of Global Trade Growth

  • World merchandise trade volume growth is likely to slow to 1 per cent in 2023, down from the previous forecast of 3 per cent made in April this year, per fresh estimates released by the WTO . This is due to multiple shocks including the Ukraine war, high energy prices, inflation, and monetary tightening, it said.
  • The WTO’s current forecast of 3.5 per cent growth in the volume of world merchandise trade in 2022 is slightly higher than previous estimate of 3 per cent mostly due to statistical revisions and the availability of new data, the report said. The Middle East is expected to record the strongest export growth of any WTO region this year (14.6 per cent), followed by Africa (6 per cent), North America (3.4 per cent), Asia (2.9 per cent), Europe (1.8 per cent) and South America (1.6 per cent). In contrast, CIS exports are estimated to decline by 5.8 per cent this year.

AWARDS
Nobel Prize 2022: Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal& Barry Sharpless gets Nobel Prize in chemistry

  • The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 was awarded jointly to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry” at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
  •  The three have been awarded for their work in ‘click chemistry’, in which molecules snap together fast and firmly, without the need for a long, complicated process and too many unwanted byproducts. Their work has applications in the field of medical science, including the treatment of cancer. Bertozzi is based at Stanford University in California, Sharpless with Scripps Research, California, and Meldal is at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Nobel Prize In Physics 2022: Alain Aspect, John F Clauser and Anton Zeilinger awarded Nobel Prize

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2022 was awarded to Alain Aspect (France), John F. Clauser (USA) and Anton Zeilinger (Austria) for their work on quantum mechanics. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science,”.
  • The 2022 physics laureates’ development of experimental tools has laid the foundation for a new era of quantum technology. Being able to manipulate and manage quantum states and all their layers of properties gives us access to tools with unexpected potential.
  • Intense research and development are underway to utilise the special properties of individual particle systems to construct quantum computers, improve measurements, build quantum networks and establish secure quantum encrypted communication.

IITM scientist Roxy Mathew Koll awarded Devendra Lal Memorial Medal 2022

  • Roxy Mathew Koll, a scientist at the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), received the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal. Koll was selected for his outstanding research in Earth and space sciences. He will also be conferred as a Fellow of the AGU. AGU is a non-profit organisation that annually recognises a select number of individuals as part of its honours and recognition programme in Earth and space sciences.
  • The medal is named in honour of professor Devendra Lal, a distinguished geophysicist whose work spanned diverse areas of the Earth and space sciences. He is best known for his role in founding and developing the held in which cosmic rays produced isotopes on Earth are used as tracers to investigate a wide range of Earth science problems.
