NATIONAL
CBI launched Operation ‘GARUDA’ to dismantle drug networks

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a multi-phase ‘Operation Garuda’. Operation Garuda will help to disrupt, degrade, and dismantle networks with international linkages through the rapid exchange of criminal intelligence on drug trafficking and coordinated law enforcement action across international jurisdictions through Interpol.
  • Operation Garuda is a Global Operation that was initiated in close coordination with Interpol and Narcotics Control Bureau.
  • Operation Garuda was initiated to combat the smuggling of illicit drugs and psychotropic substances, with a special focus on the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The CBI and the NCB have been closely coordinating with all the states and UTs police agencies for information exchange, analysis, and development of Operational Information.
  • Across multiple states of India several arrests, searches, and seizures were carried out under Operation Garuda.
  • In this operation apart from CBI and NCB, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Manipur also participated in Operation Garuda.
  • During this special operation, 6600 suspects were checked, 127 new cases were registered, and 175 persons including six absconder’s offenders were arrested.

ISRO scientist Anil Kumar elected Vice President of IAF

  • Senior Indian Space Research Organization scientist Anil Kumar has been appointed as the Vice-President of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Dr. Anil Kumar is currently serving as the Associate Director, of ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC).
  • The International Astronautical Federation was founded in 1951. IAF is one of the world’s top space advocacy bodies with 433 members in 72 nations. International Astronautical Federation Congress (IAC) is an annual space event and it is attended by more than 6000 participants, IAC is organized by the IAF. The International Astronautical Federation Congress includes networking events, talks, and a technical program on advances in science and exploration, applications, and operations, technology, infrastructure, and space and society.

China withdraws its IAEA anti AUKUS resolution sighting no support

  • At the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) general session in Vienna, China withdrew a draught resolution criticising the AUKUS alliance after determining that it would not be supported by a majority of the attendees. In order to prevent the draught resolution that claimed the AUKUS proposal breached Australia’s, the UK’s, and the US’ obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), India collaborated closely with numerous IAEA member nations.
  • At the UN nuclear watchdog, China battled with the three members of the AUKUS alliance over the proposal to send Australia nuclear-powered submarines.
  • This came at the end of a week in which Beijing repeatedly criticised the project that was disclosed last year.
  • AUKUS was rejected in the draught resolution because it wanted to give Australia nuclear-powered submarines, even though they would be armed with conventional weapons.
  • The resolution’s draught also criticised the IAEA ‘s participation in this matter in addition to claiming that the proposal breached the obligations of the three countries under the NPT.

ECONOMY
Eight Core Sectors Growth hits 9-month low at 3.3% in August

  • The output of eight core infrastructure sectors grew 3.3 per cent in August the lowest in nine months as against 12.2 per cent in the year-ago period, according to official data released. The previous low was in November 2021 at 3.2 per cent. It stood at 4.5 per cent in July.
  • The production growth of eight infrastructure sectors — coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity — was 9.8 per cent during April-August this fiscal, compared to 19.4 per cent a year ago. Crude oil and natural gas production contracted by 3.3 per cent and 0.9 per cent, respectively, during the month under review.
  • The weight of the items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is made up of the Eight Core Industries in 40.27 per cent. August 2022 saw an increase in the output of steel, cement, coal, refinery products, fertilisers, and electricity compared to the same month the previous year, according to official statistics issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) measures the combined and individual performance of output in chosen eight essential industries, namely Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement, and Electricity.
  • The Index of Eight Core Industries’ overall growth rate for May 2022 is adjusted from its initial reading of 18.1% to 19.3%. ICI’s growth rate from April through August 2022–2023 was 9.8% higher than it was during the same time period the previous FY.

Indian Mars Orbiter Mission: Mangalyaan Craft Completes 8 Years in Orbit

  • Mangalyaan, the Indian Mars Orbiter Craft runs out of fuel and battery after completing 8 years. Mangalyaan was a huge achievement for the Indian Space Research Organization. It helped to study the Martian landscape including surface geology, morphology, atmospheric processes, surface temperature, and atmospheric escape process.
  • Mangalyaan used five major instruments to study geology and morphology. These five instruments included Mars Color Camera (MCC), Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Mars Exospheric Neutral Competition Analyser (MENCA), and Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP).
  • The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is also known as Mangalyaan. It was a space probe orbiting Mars on 24th September 2014. The Indian Space Research Organization launched the MOM on 5th November 2013. It is India’s first interplanetary mission and the fourth space agency to achieve Mars orbit. India became the first Asian nation to reach Martian orbit and the first nation in the world to reach Mars on a Maiden attempt.
  • The Mars Orbiter Mission probe was launched from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Andhra Pradesh using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket C25 at 9:08 UTC on 5th November 2013. The launch window was approximately 20 days long and started on 28th October 2013.

Light combat helicopter introduced in IAF base at Jodhpur

  • At a ceremony conducted at Air Force Station, Jodhpur in Rajasthan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially admitted the locally produced Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) into the Indian Air Force (IAF). LCH would join the 143 Helicopter Unit after being inducted. Prachanda is the name given to Light Combat Helicopters (LCH).
  • LCH has a 550 km range and a 6500 m operating ceiling. It is equipped with 20 mm cannon, 70 mm rockets, and air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
  • The flight crew’s helmet-mounted display, an electronic warfare suite, and a complete glass cockpit are among its many features.
  • Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) is capable of a variety of tasks, including as combat search and rescue, neutralising enemy air defence, and conducting counterinsurgency operations in both urban and forest settings.
  • In March of this year, the Cabinet Committee on Security gave its approval for the procurement of 15 indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) helicopters.

Optimus robot’s prototype unveiled by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla

  • Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, unveiled a model of the humanoid “Optimus” robot, which uses some of the same Artificial Intelligence (AI) software and sensors as the Autopilot driving assistance system in Tesla vehicles. At Tesla AI Day 2022, which was held to show off how far the company’s research into autonomous robots and vehicles had progressed, Optimus was unveiled.
  • Optimus was initially seen during the event pacing around the stage, along with updates on new self-driving software and a first look at the Dojo hardware that powers Tesla’s AI research, according to media sources.
  • Elon Musk claims that this humanoid prototype is capable of more than what was demonstrated in real life.

Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh suspended till 2025 for doping

  • Indian javelin thrower, Shivpal Singh has been suspended from competing till October 2025 due to a doping violation.
  • As per the Olympics.com he subsequently tested positive for the banned substance methandienone, a performance-enhancing steroid. As a result, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) suspended Shivpal Singh for four years.
  • The ban comes into effect from October 21, 2021, which means that the 27-year-old will be out of action till October 2025.

AWARDS
Nobel prize 2022: Svante Pääbo awarded Nobel Prize in medicine

  • The Nobel Prizes 2022 for medicine or physiology was awarded to Swedish geneticist Svante Pääbo. Svante Pääbo was given the award “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution,” the Nobel Prize committee. Considered the most prestigious prize in the scientific world, it is awarded by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($900,357).
  • The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). The prize money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895. The other prizes are for outstanding work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics.

Writer-academic Madhav Hada to be awarded 32nd Bihari Puraskar

  • Writer Dr Madhav Hada will be awarded the 32nd Bihari Puraskar for his 2015 literary criticism book ‘Pachrang Chola PaharSakhi Ri’, the KK Birla Foundation announced. A literary critic and academic, Hada has written extensively on literature, media, culture and history. He has also been a member of the general council of the Sahitya Akademi and the Hindi Advisory Board. He has been a recipient of the Bhartendu Harishchandra Award for Media Studies and the Devraj Upadhyay Award for Literary Criticism.
  • The Bihari Puraskar is one of the three literary awards instituted by the KK Birla foundation in 1991. Named after famous Hindi poet Bihari, the award is given every year for an outstanding work published in the last 10 years by a Rajasthani author in Hindi or Rajasthani. It carries a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh, a plaque and a citation. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee headed by chairman Hemant Shesh.

Indian Women’s rights activist Srishti Bakshi wins ‘Changemaker’ award

  • A women’s rights activist from India, Srishti Bakshi has won the ‘Changemaker‘ award at the UN SDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) Action Awards held at a ceremony in Bonn, Germany. The award is given to recognise the efforts of Srishti Bakshi to raise awareness of gender-based violence and inequality.
  • Srishti Bakshi, a marketer ­turned­women’s­ rights­ activist and founder of the CrossBow Miles movement, started on an on­foot pilgrimage of 3,800 Km through 12 Indian states from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. She has covered a distance of 30­35 km and met anywhere between 150­200 people a day. She has already walked through the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.

Lalit Bhasin elected new President of Indo-American Chambers of Commerce

  • Noted lawyer Lalit Bhasin has been appointed as the national president of Indian American Chambers of Commerce (IACC). Bhasin, before being elected to the post, was the executive vice president of IACC. Bhasin is the 54th national president of IACC, which was set up in October 1968 and is headquartered in Mumbai, having 14 offices all over India, with a large membership from large, medium and small business entities.
  • Bhasin’s 60 years of eminent association with legal practice took him to several leadership positions in the profession. He is closely associated with India’s apex business organizations like CII, and PHD CCI and served as chairman of its legal committees
