GoI appoints Sangeeta Verma as acting chairperson of CCI

  • The government of India appointed Sangeeta Verma as the acting chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
  • The appointment follows full-time Chairperson Ashok Kumar Gupta demitting office. Verma is currently a member at the regulator. Her appointment will be effective for a “period of three months or till the appointment of regular Chairperson or till any further orders, whichever is the earliest,” according to an official order. Ashok Kumar Gupta had taken over as the CCI chairperson in November 2018.

Blue Beaches: Two more Indian Beaches enter the coveted list

  • Two more Indian beaches have made it to the list of Blue Beaches. Minicoy, Thundi Beach and Kadmat Beach, in Lakshadweep are the proud entrants in the coveted list of Blue Beaches, an eco-label given to the cleanest beaches in the world.
  •  Now the tally of total blue flag-endorsed beaches in India stands at 12. Both beaches have designated staff for beach cleanliness, maintenance, safety and security of swimmers. Further, they comply with all the 33 criteria mandated by the Foundation for Environment Education (FEE).
  • Thundi Beach is one of the most scenic beaches in the Lakshadweep archipelago with hues of white sand mixed with turquoise & blue shade water by the lagoon, a paradise for swimmers and tourists.
  • While the Kadmat Beach is popular with cruise tourists who visit the island for water sports. It is a paradise for nature lovers with its pearl white sand, blue lagoon waters, its moderate climate and friendly locals.

United States Appoints Elizabeth Jones To Serve As Chargé d’Affaires At US Embassy in New Delhi

  • The Biden administration has now named a senior US diplomat, who had worked on NATO’s role in Europe vis-a-vis Russia as the US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, as the next Charge d’Affaires ad interim in New Delhi — until a full-time Ambassador is sent to India.
  • For the past 21 months, the position of US ambassador to India has remained vacant. This is the “longest-ever stretch” where India has not had an ambassador from the US, according to data compiled by US-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Experts say the absence of an ambassador in New Delhi has not gravely affected diplomatic relations, but add that it is “not the best look”.

North Korea fires two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast; South Korea says, no reports of damage

  • North Korea today, October 28 fired two short-range ballistic missiles off the east coast with the projectiles falling outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone. South Korea’s Military said, there were no reports of damage. Other details, including the projectile’s flight range, were not immediately available. The launches marked the North's 28th round of missile tests this year.
  • On Wednesday, the United States, South Korea, and Japan warned that an “unparalleled” response would be warranted if North Korea conducts a seventh test of a nuclear weapon. This October, North Korea fired multiple artillery barrages into a maritime "buffer zone" that was set up in 2018 as a way of reducing tensions with the South during a period of ill-fated diplomacy. It also announced that it had staged what it called "tactical nuclear drills" that simulated showering the South with nuke-tipped missiles.

RBI schedules additional meeting of Monetary Policy Committee to prepare report on inflation

  • The Reserve Bank has scheduled an additional meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee on the 3rd of November. With recent data revealing that India’s retail inflation had risen to 7.41 percent in September, the Reserve Bank is likely to assess its further course of action. The panel is likely to prepare a report on why inflation has kept climbing despite its various efforts.
  • The monetary committee had last met between 28-30 September, wherein it had increased the policy repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.9 percent. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said that the reason behind the rate hike was persistent high inflation, making it necessary to further calibrate the withdrawal of accommodation. The panel will again meet between 5-7 December as per the original schedule.

Energy crisis can accelerate green transition: IEA

  • The International Energy Agency, IEA, has said that energy crisis triggered by Russia-Ukraine conflict could transform the global energy landscape for decades and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
  • In its latest annual World Energy Outlook reports, the IEA said that the energy crisis was causing profound and long-lasting changes that have the potential to hasten the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy system.
  • The IEA executive director Fatih Birol in a statement said that energy markets and policies have changed as a result of Russia-Ukraine conflict, not only for the time being, but for decades to come.
  • The energy world is shifting dramatically. Mr. Birol said that governments' responses around the world promise to make this a historic and definitive turning point towards a cleaner, more affordable and more secure energy system.
  • According to IEA's forecast, investments into renewable energy will increase by 50 percent to 2 trillion dollar per year by 2030.

Current climate pledges still 'nowhere near' enough for 1.5°C, says United Nation

  • The United Nation said yesterday that world’s current climate pledges are far off track to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The UN said, it will steer a world already wracked by increasing floods, heatwaves and storms towards catastrophic warming.
  • The United Nation’s climate change organisation, said that combined commitments from nearly 200 nations put Earth on track to warm around 2.5 Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels by the century’s end.
  • With the planet is already battered by weather extremes after 1.2 degrees Celsius of warming.   
  • The UN’s climate experts have said that emissions compared to 2010 levels, need to fall 45 percent by 2030 in order to meet the 2015 Paris climate deal’s more ambitious 1.5 degrees Celsius goal.

BCCI decides to end discrimination; offer equal pay to men & women cricketers

  • In a historic move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced equal match fee for both men and women cricket players of India.
  • BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced the landmark decision in a tweet. He said the move was BCCI's "first step towards tackling discrimination." The BCCI women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. As per new rules, the payment for Tests will be 15 lakh rupees, 6 lakh rupees for ODIs, and 3 lakh rupees for T-20.

FIPRESCI declared ‘PatherPanchali’ as best Indian movie

  • Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s feature “PatherPanchali” has been declared the best Indian film of all time by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). The 1955 film has received the number one slot in the top ten films in the history of Indian cinema list, which was declared after a poll conducted by the India chapter of FIPRESCI.
  • Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, “PatherPanchali” was Ray’s directorial debut. It starred Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta and Chunibala Devi. As per a press release issued by FIPRESCI-India, the poll was conducted in secret and involved 30 members.
