NATIONAL
CNG, LNG, 98 other advanced techs included under auto PLI scheme

  • The Union government added more than 100 advanced technologies, including alternate fuel systems like compressed natural gas (CNG) &Liquified natural gas (LNG) under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for automobiles.
  • Now the scheme will also cover Bharat Stage VI compliant flex fuel engines, advanced driver assist system, e-quadricyle and electronic control units (ECU) for safety.
  • Before this move, government has included only two-wheelers and four-wheelers under PLI scheme.
  • Union Cabinet had approved the PLI scheme for automobiles with an outlay of Rs. 25,938 crore, in September 2021. This scheme aims to incentivise high-value advanced automotive technology vehicles and products like adaptive front-lighting, sunroofs, tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic braking, and collision warning systems, for auto industry. It also aims to boost manufacturing capability in the automobile sector, including hydrogen & electric fuel cell vehicles.
  • The incentive structure under the PLI Scheme aims to encourage industry for making fresh investments for the purpose of indigenous global supply chains of advanced automotive technology products.

  • President Ram NathKovind has exhorted the Governors to play the role of the friend, philosopher, and guide of the public and government.
  • The President pointed out that Governors had a very important role in creating awareness among the people about the national goals and ensuring public participation.
  • To fulfill this commitment, they must spend as much time as possible in their state and maintain a connection with the people.
  • President Ram NathKovind urged the governors to adopt the best practices as discussed in the conference in their states.

COP-26 Climate Summit in Glasgow to conclude today

  • The on-going COP-26 Climate Summit in Glasgow concludes on No 12th.
  • At COP-26, the Parties worked to achieve the completion of Paris Agreement implementation guidelines, the mobilization of climate finance, actions to strengthen climate adaptation, technology development, and transfer and keeping in reach the Paris Agreement goals of limiting the rise in global temperatures.
  • On the final day, COP-26 will arrive at an agreement that may focus on adaptation and helping countries deal with the effects of climate change and finance, a controversial issue because poorer countries blame richer countries for not contributing enough.
  • As far as India is concerned, it will achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and reduce one billion tonnes of carbon emissions from the total projected emissions by 2030.
  • India will bring its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030 and it will fulfill 50 percent of its energy requirement through renewable energy by 2030.
  • The country constitutes 17 percent of the global population and its contribution to the emission has remained only five percent.
  • All climate finance promises have been empty ones so far and developed countries must ensure one trillion dollar climate finance at the earliest.
  • The idea of One Sun, One World, One Grid was mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Glasgow Summit and followed by a launch thereof. The initiative calls for setting up of a global grid that would be able to transmit solar power that is clean energy anywhere and anytime. It will reduce the storage needs, make solar projects viable and reduce carbon footprints and the energy cost.

India Post Payments Bank tie-up with Bajaj Allianz for distribution of non-life insurance

  • India Post Payments Bank has entered into a tie-up with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company to enable customers, particularly from weaker sections and living in unbanked and underserved areas, to become financially secure and empowered.
  • Department of Posts and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company announced a strategic partnership for offering term and annuity products to customers. These products will be provided through the Bank’s extensive network of 650 branches and over one lakh 36 thousand banking access points.
  • Bajaj Allianz Life Smart Protect Goal and Bajaj Allianz Life Guaranteed Pension Goal are the term and annuity products, which will be offered as per this strategic alliance. Both the products will be available to customers in addition to the Department of Posts' existing Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance products

T20 World Cup 2021; Australia beats Pakistan by five wickets, Matthew Wade takes AUS to final

  • In the ICC Men's T-20 Cricket World Cup, Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade played unbeaten knocks of 40 and 41 respectively as Australia defeated Pakistan by five wickets to enter the final at Dubai International Stadium.
  • Wade finished the game with three back-to-back sixes off Shaheen Shah Afridi to finish the game with an over to spare and five wickets in hand. Matthew Wade was declared Player of the Match. Australia will now lock horns against New Zealand in the summit clash on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

Climate Change Performance Index- India’s Rank

  • German-watch in collaboration with Climate Action Network (CAN) and New Climate Institute, published the “Climate Change Performance Index 2022” on November 10.
  • Report was released on the side-lines of COP26 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • CCPI 2022 finds that, major emitting economies which announced their Net Zero emission release targets poorly in climate change performance over 2021.
  • In the index, India maintained its 10th rank.
  • India continued to be among top-performing countries within G20.
  • As per report, while United States has been ranked at 55th position among 66 countries with very low rating, despite USA is improving since it re-entered global climate negotiation process after President Joe Biden came to power.
  • China has moved down four places as compared to 2020 ranking. It is ranked at 37th.
  • European Union is ranked at 22nd position, six places down as compared to 2020 ranking. It has been given ‘medium’ rating.
  • UK is occupying 7th slot.
  • Denmark emerged as the topper in the list with 76.92 per cent score.
  • Denmark is followed by Sweden and Norway.
  • CCPI is an independent monitoring tool, playing a leading role in providing information on implementation phase of Paris Agreement. It has provided analysis of climate protection performance of countries since 2005. The index evaluates 60 countries and European Union, which generate about 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It analyses countries in four categories comprising of 14 indicators:
    1. Greenhouse gas emissions (40 per cent of total score),
    2. Renewable energy (20 per cent),
    3. Energy use (20 per cent) and
    4. Climate policy (20 per cent).

South Africa's last apartheid president dies at 85

  • FW de Klerk, the former president of South Africa and the last white person to lead the country, has died.
  • The 85-year-old had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
  • He came to power in 1989 under apartheid, a system of legalised racism, but later became a key figure in the transition to democracy.
  • He ordered Nelson Mandela's release from prison, leading to historic polls where the anti-apartheid leader became the first black president.
  • De Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela for helping to negotiate an end to apartheid. But his legacy divides opinion in South Africa.
