Government sets target to reduce 50% of road accident deaths by 2024: Nitin Gadkari

  • Union Government has accorded highest priority to road safety and set the target to reduce 50 percent of road accident deaths by 2024.
  • Addressing an event, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed on sensitization of stakeholders for collectively addressing issues regarding road safety.
  • Road safety is a very serious issue and there should be zero tolerance for road accidents and that action should be taken immediately on black spots. All Regional Officers and Project Directors should take a pledge of zero accidents.

Reliance became 1st Indian company to cross USD 100 bn annual revenue

  • Reliance Industries become the first Indian company to record annual revenue of more than a whopping $100 billion.
  • The company has recorded a 22.5% rise in net profit for the quarter ended March 2022. Reliance has recorded strong growth in retail, digital services, and the oil & gas business.
  • The company has also reported the highest-ever quarterly EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) of Rs. 33,968 crores (28% up) year-on-year.
  • Reliance’s earnings also rose because of a rise in broadband subscribers, online retail gaining traction and new energy investment picking roots.
  • Consolidated revenue of the nation’s biggest company by market value rose 35 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2.32 lakh crore in the fourth quarter of FY22. For the full fiscal 2021-22 (April 2021 to March 2022), Reliance reported a net profit of Rs 60,705 crore on a revenue of Rs. 7.92 lakh crore (USD 102 billion). It is the first Indian company to have crossed USD 100 billion in revenue in a year.

Philippines Election: Ferdinand Marcos Jr poised to win Presidential election by landslide

  • Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son of the Philippines' former dictator, is poised to win the Presidential election by a landslide. According to the partial and preliminary trends, the Senator has so far won 55.8 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for rival LeniRobredo.
  • His win will mark the Marcos family's return to power after 36 years. Mr. Marcos Jr will take over from President Rodrigo Duterte, a hugely popular strongman-style leader who courted controversy on the global stage for his brutal crackdown on drug dealers and users.
  • The election was not just for the Presidential positions, but also for senators, the lower house, and regional officials across the entire archipelago. The official count of all votes may take days.
  • Former President Ferdinand Marcos was known for his brutal authoritarian rule. Mr. Marcos Sr, along with his wife Imelda and their cronies, plundered an estimated 10 billion dollars from public funds before he was removed by a popular revolt in 1986. During this period the Philippines' economy was heavily in debt and ordinary people struggled.

Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns after anti-govt protests

  • Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post after anti-government protests across the island nation.
  •  Sri Lanka's Health Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana has also handed over his resignation letter to the President. These resginations came after violent clashes erupted in Colombo over the economic crisis in the country.
  • Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed across the country after supporters of the country's ruling party stormed a major protest site in Colombo, attacking anti-government demonstrators and clashing with Police who used tear gas and water cannons to drive them back.
  • President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had declared a State of Emergency in the country.
  •  It was the second time that emergency was declared in Sri Lanka in just over a month.

World Food Prize 2022 received by NASA’s Cynthia Rosenzweig

  • A senior research scientist and head of the Climate Impacts Group at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, Cynthia Rosenzweig has received the 2022 World Food Prize from the World Food Prize Foundation.
  •  Rosenzweig was selected for the award for her research to understand the relationship between climate and food systems and forecast how both will change in the future.
  • Her modelling work has provided a foundation for decision-makers around the world to create strategies to mitigate climate change and adapt our food systems to a changing planet, which has helped communities worldwide address the consequences of Earth’s changing climate.

DD National Pet Show ‘Best Friend Forever’ Wins ENBA Award 2021

  • Doordarshan has won ENBA Award 2021 for the best in-depth Hindi series for its TV series based on pet care ‘Best Friend Forever’ at the 14th edition of the Exchange4media News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA).
  •  The show is aired every Sunday at 7 pm and is also available on the YouTube channel of DD National.

Slain photo journalist Danish Siddiqui among four Indians honoured with prestigious Pulitzer Prize 2022

  • Pulitzer Prize-2022 was announced in the fields of journalism, book, drama, and accompaniment.
  •  According to the Pulitzer Prizes website, slain photo journalist Danish Siddiqui is among four Indians honoured with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize 2022 in the feature photography category.
  • Siddiqui and his colleagues Adnan Abidi, SannaIrshadMattoo, and Amit Dave from a news agency won the award. Their work was moved from the Breaking News Photography category by the judges.
  • Siddiqui, 38, was on assignment in Afghanistan last year when he died. Marcus Yam of the Los Angeles Times bagged the award in the Breaking News Photography category. Meanwhile, the Washington Post bagged the Pulitzer Prize in public service journalism for its coverage of the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.

  • The 106th class of Pulitzer Prize winners in Journalism, Books, Drama and Music were announced. The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition within the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University.

Alkesh Kumar Sharma appointed as Ministry of Electronics and IT’s Secretary

  • Alkesh Kumar Sharma, a senior IAS officer, has been named Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
  •  He was previously the Cabinet Secretariat’s secretary (Coordination). Alkesh Kumar Sharma previously served as Kerala’s additional chief secretary for industries from May 2020 to April 2021.
  •  Sharma served as the Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail and the CEO of the Cochin Smart City Mission from September 2019 until April 2021.
  • The Union ministry is tasked with becoming India the world’s most connected nation, providing clarity to digital government, simplifying laws and legislation for technology and social media companies, and emphasising on India’s high-tech expertise under the initiative.

Odia Writer Padma Shri Rajat Kumar Kar passes away

  • The eminent Odia litterateur Rajat Kumar Kar passed away due to heart-related ailments. He received Padma Shri in 2021 for literature and education. He was known for his commentary during the annual RathaJatra (Jagannath culture) on TV and radio.
  •  His writing includes UpendraBhanja literature and has seven non-fiction to his credit. He also contributed to the revival of the dying art of Pala of Odisha.

Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s singles title at the Madrid Open title 2022

  • Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) has clinched the men’s singles Madrid Open title 2022 after beating the defending champion Alexander Zverev (Germany).
  • Alcaraz has also defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (world No.1) to reach the final. It is his second Masters 1000 crown after Miami 2022 and his fourth title of the year.
  • OnsJabeur (Tunisia) has clinched the women’s singles title to become the first African player to win a WTA 1000 event.

Max Verstappen won Miami Grand Prix 2022

  • F1 world champion Max Verstappen has won the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for Red Bull after defeating the Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc. Leclerc (Ferrari) finished second and Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) placed third in the Miami Grand Prix 2022.
  •  The victory cut Leclerc’s lead over Verstappen to 19 points in the championship, while the Monegasque’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz completed the podium.
