India, S. Korea, US, Japan, EU Launch Biopharmaceutical Alliance

  • India, the United States, South Korea, Japan, and the European Union have launched a Biopharmaceuticals Alliance, with its first meeting held in San Diego, USA, during the Bio International Convention 2024, the world’s largest pharmaceutical exhibition.
  • Biopharmaceuticals are medical drugs produced using living organisms’ organs, tissues, microorganisms, animal fluids, or genetically modified cells. Unlike chemically manufactured drugs, biopharmaceuticals use biotechnology to produce proteins and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, or antisense oligonucleotides). It is projected that within 5 to 10 years, biopharmaceuticals will comprise around 50% of new medical drugs.
  • The BIO International Convention, held from June 3-6, 2024, is considered the world’s largest biotechnology event, attracting over 18,500 industry leaders globally.

United Nations Security Council Election Results and Composition

  • The United Nations General Assembly convened to elect new non-permanent members to the UN Security Council. Pakistan, Somalia, Panama, Denmark, and Greece secured seats for a two-year term starting January 1, 2025, replacing Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Ecuador, and Switzerland. These newly elected members will join Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia as the other non-permanent members.
  • The UN Security Council comprises 15 members, with five permanent members possessing veto power: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. The 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms without veto power.
  • Established on October 24, 1945, the United Nations is an international organization comprising 193 member countries, headquartered in New York, United States. Antonio Guterres serves as the Secretary-General.

Climate Conference in November to emphasis ‘Peace and Truce’

  • The annual climate conference to be held here in November 11, will lay particular stress on “Peace” and “Truce” to enable countries to focus on climate solution amid ongoing conflicts. The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) will convene in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • This event will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29), the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 19), and the sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 6) that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters. The 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 61) will also meet.
