NATIONAL
Blue Duke declared as the State Butterfly of Sikkim

  • Chief Minister P.S. Golay, during the World Environment Day celebrations, declared Blue Duke as the State Butterfly of Sikkim.
  •  The announcement was made at Saramsa Garden near Ranipool during the event organized by the Forest department.
  •  Blue Duke, a native butterfly species of Sikkim, edged past another contender Krishna Peacock to be announced as the State Butterfly of Sikkim. The two butterflies, among the 720-odd butterfly species, had been shortlisted for the State Butterfly nominations.
  • According to the Forest department, an online voting was conducted between April and September to select the State Butterfly. Among the 4036 votes, 57% of the votes went in favour of Blue Duke while 43% voted for Krishna Peacock.

INTERNATIONAL
NATO conducts naval exercises in Baltic Sea with NATO allies and partners

  • U.S.-led naval exercise in the Baltic Sea, more than 7,000 sailors, airmen, and marines from 16 nations, including two aspiring NATO members, Finland and Sweden, began a nearly two-week.
  • BALTOPS, an annual naval exercise that began in 1972, is not performed in response to any specific danger. However, NATO stated that “with both Sweden and Finland participating, NATO is embracing the opportunity in an unpredictable world to increase its combined force resilience and strength” in collaboration with two Nordic aspirant countries.

India & Canada inked MoU on Climate Action for Stronger Cooperation

  • India and Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen bilateral collaboration on climate change, environmental preservation, and conservation.
  •  On the sidelines of the Stockholm+50 summit, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and his Canadian colleague Steven Guilbeault signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • The gathering is being hosted to honour the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Summit, the world’s first environmental conference.
  • Under the terms of the agreement, the two countries will work together, share information and expertise, and support each other’s goals in a variety of areas, including increasing renewable energy capacity, decarbonizing heavy industries, reducing plastic pollution, promoting chemical safety, and ensuring sustainable consumption.

ECONOMY
India’s foreign exchange reserves have surpassed USD 600 billion

  • According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves increased by USD 3.854 billion to USD 601.363 billion, owing to a substantial growth in the country’s foreign currency assets.
  • After decreasing for ten weeks in a row, the country’s currency reserves have climbed dramatically for the second week in a row. During the week, foreign exchange reserves increased by USD 4.23 billion.
  • All components of the forex reserves climbed for the week ending May 27, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s weekly statistical supplement, led by a strong increase in foreign currency assets.
  • During the week under review, India’s foreign currency assets, which make up the majority of the country’s FX reserves, increased by USD 3.610 billion to USD 536.988 billion.

World Bank slashes global economic growth forecast for 2022 due to Russia-Ukraine conflict, supply chain disruption and other factors

  • World Bank yesterday slashed the global economic growth forecast for 2022 due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, supply chain disruption and other factors. It added that many countries are likely to face recession.
  • In its Global Economic Prospects report, the bank said, the world economy is expected to experience its sharpest deceleration following an initial recovery from global recession in more than 80 years.
  • It has been predicted that the world economy will expand 2.9% this year. It will be down from last year's 5.7% global growth and from the 4.1% it had forecast for this year back in January.
  • World Bank’s president David Malpass said, the war in Ukraine, lockdowns in China, supply-chain disruptions, and the risk of stagflation are hammering growth. For many countries, recession will be hard to avoid, he added.

Indian shooter Avani Lekhara strikes gold at Para Shooting World Cup in France with record score

  • Indian shooter Avani Lekhara won gold medal at the Para Shooting World Cup in France yesterday with a record score. The victory assured Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Lekhara of a spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • Avani created a world record by scoring 250.6 in the women's 10-meter air rifle standing SH1 event. The 20-year-old shooter broke her own world record of 249.6.
  • The SH1 category is for athletes with lower limb impairment for competition in rifle events.

Sakshi Malik, Mansi, and DivyaKakran won gold in the Bolat Turlykhanov Cup

  • Sakshi Malik, Rio Olympics Bronze medallist won her first international gold medal at the Bolat Turlykhanov Cup in almost five years. She showed a very impressive performance this year in Bolat Turlykhanov Cup.
  • Her first win was against Irina Kuznetsova from Kazakhstan and the other match was against RushanaAbdirasulova, in which the points were 9-3. Sakshi Malik entered the finals by winning against Kuznetsova with leading points 7-4. She pinned down Irina Kuznetsova for the second time in a single day.

World Ocean Day History

  • The concept of World’s Ocean Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio De Janeiro as a way to celebrate our World’s shared Ocean and our personal connection to the sea. This day is also celebrated to raise awareness about the crucial role that the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.
  • World Ocean Day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to be celebrated worldwide, annually on 8 June to resolve the problems of Oceans and also to save Ocean water.  On 8 June 2009, World Ocean Day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly.

Theme:

  • The theme for World Oceans Day this year is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean." As per the UN, World Oceans Day is celebrated to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean and to develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the oceans.

Abania Elects General Major Bajram Begaj as New President

  • Albania’s parliament has elected a top military official, General Major BajramBegaj as its new president after no candidates were nominated in three rounds of voting.
  • The outgoing President Ilir Meta signed the decree on Begaj’s dismissal as Chief of General Staff of the AAF.
  • Earlier, BajramBegaj held the post of the Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces (AAF). He is Albania’s 8th president and the 3rd from the military ranks. Bajram Begaj will take oath as the new president on 25th July 2022 to replace the current president ‘Ilir Meta’, who will remain in office until 22nd July 2022.
