Nation to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on 75th death anniversary

  • The nation will pay homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 75th death anniversary today. The day is also observed as Martyrs' Day.
  • Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948. An inter-religious prayer meeting will be organised at Gandhi Samadhi at Rajghat in New Delhi.

  • India’s G-20 Sherpa Mr Amitabh Kant inaugurated India’s first Model G-20 Summit organised by Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini’s Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership.
  • The two-day Model G-20 Summit starting today has been organised at the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini’s Uttan campus near Mumbai to celebrate India’s presidency and take the idea of G-20 to the youth.
  • G-20 is an important forum because it accounts for 85 per cent of the global GDP. G20 countries comprise of developed and developing countries that have provided solutions to various global issues.
  • India has taken the G-20 presidency amidst global turmoil like Post COVID challenges, geopolitical crisis, debt crisis, climate crisis, and food and energy crisis.
  • India believes that every challenge brings an opportunity. Kant further reiterated India's G-20 presidency seeks to advocate the oneness of all.

President of 77th Session of UN General Assembly, Csaba Korosi to be on 3 day visit to India

  • President of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Csaba Korosi arrived in New Delhi today on a three-day visit to India. This is his first bilateral visit to any country since he assumed UNGA Presidency in September.
  • Mr. Korosi will hold talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar on key multilateral and regional issues of mutual interest. He has outlined a few priorities for his UNGA Presidency. These include standing firm on the basic principles of the United Nations Charter and making significant and measurable progress in sustainability transformation.
  • Enhancing the role of science in decision-making, and increasing solidarity to better endure new chapters of crises facing the world are some of his other priorities.

Four Chinese government ships enters Japan's territorial waters, said Japanese Coast Guard

  • The Japanese Coast Guard has said that four Chinese government ships have entered Japan's territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. It said the vessels entered territorial waters near the islands of Minamikojima and Uotsurijima early morning today.
  • The coast guard said that it has dispatched patrol vessels to ensure the safety of the Japanese ships and to warn the Chinese vessels to leave Japan's territorial waters immediately. According to media reports, the incident marks the second time this month that Chinese government ships have been spotted in Japan's territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands. The first incident occurred on the 10th of January.

British PM sacks Conservative Party Chairman Nadhim Zahawi from govt over his tax affairs

  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dismissed Chairman of his Conservative Party Nadhim Zahawi from the government after a probe into Zahawi's tax affairs found serious breach of ministerial code.
  • The UK government released the inquiry report by Sunak's ethics advisor, Laurie Magnus.
  • Sunak had ordered investigation into former Chancellor's tax affairs amid demands from opposition to remove him.
  • Zahawi was facing allegations of settling a multimillion-dollar unpaid tax bill when was in charge of the country’s Treasury in Boris Johnson government.

Novak Djokovic wins his 10th Australian Open title, equaling Rafael Nadal's record 22 Grand Slam

  • In  Tennis,  Novak Djokovic beats Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) to win his 10th Australian Open.
  • Djokovic equals Rafael Nadal's men's record of 22 Grand Slam titles and the  Serb will now be world number one in ranking. Tsitsipas is still waiting for first major title.

BCCI announces cash prize worth 5 crore rupees for U-19 woman's cricket team for winning World Cup

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a cash reward of five crores rupees for the Indian women's team after they emerged as champions in the inaugural edition of the ICC Under-19 Women's T-20 World Cup in South Africa.
  • India lifted the inaugural Under-19 Women's T-20 trophy, beating England by seven wickets in the final at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Team India led by Shafali Verma chased down a modest target of 69 runs in 14 overs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated the Indian Women’s Cricket Team on the win.
