Centre establishes 3 Grievance Appellate Committees based on recently amended IT Rules 2021
- The Centre today established three Grievance Appellate Committees (GAC) based on the recently amended Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules 2021). The Committees are composed of three members each.
- The Electronics and Information Technology Ministry said, the GAC is a piece of the overall policy and legal framework to ensure that the Internet in India is Open, Safe, Trusted and Accountable. This process is going to be completely digital and online, it added.
- Here, the users will have the option to appeal against the decision of the Grievance officer of the social media and other online intermediaries before this new Appellate body. The Committee will endeavour to address the users' appeals within a period of 30 days. The users can make their appeals on the www.gac.gov.in portal.

New Zealand: Country's largest city Auckland declared state of emergency
- In New Zealand, the Country's largest city Auckland has declared a state of emergency yesterday after torrential rain prompted widespread flooding and evacuations. According to media reports, the city have received 75 per cent of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours. Yesterday's downpour in Auckland shifted houses, stalled traffic and cut power to homes and businesses.
- The flooding also disrupted travel to and from Auckland Airport. As per reports, domestic and international flights have now been grounded until at least midday on Saturday. New Zealand Defence Force is helping with evacuations and emergency shelters have been set up across the city.
Sri Lanka President says he will fully implement 13th amendment to constitution aimed at giving more autonomy to provinces
- Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that he will fully implement the thirteenth amendment to the constitution aimed at giving more autonomy to provinces. The amendment was incorporated in 1987 and has not been fully implemented especially in terms of police and land powers.
- The 13th Amendment is being implemented as per Supreme Court’s directions and if it is not implemented Parliament should abolish the amendment. The President stressed that he was not ready to divide the country at all and would not betray the Sinhalese nation as well.
- Mr. Wickremesinghe added that the implementation of the amendment will require setting up of land commission and Provincial police commissions. He added that the Land Commission needs to be established immediately and a draft bill in that regard could be moved by March.
- The President also expressed his plan to make a statement to parliament on 8th of February. Mr. Wickremesinghe called all parties to solve political and economic issues step by step in a manner that could be accepted by all.
- Ex-Presidents Mahinda Rajaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunewardene, representatives from Tamil and Muslim parties were present in the meeting.

Ace Tennis player Sania Mirza bids adieu to her Grand Slam career after finishing runners-up in the Mixed Doubles final of the Australian Open
- Indian duo Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna came second to Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos of Brazil in the Australian Open mixed doubles final today at Melbourne Park as the Brazillian pair clinched their maiden Grand Slam.
- Sania Mirza was competing in her final Grand Slam with Rohan Bopanna where the duo was defeated 7-6, 6-2 by Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos. Rohan Bopanna, who will turn 43 in March, and Sania Mirza, 36, had a difficult beginning because the latter was broken on his first serve.
- Sania Mirza won two Grand Slam tournaments at the Australian Open. She won the Australian Open women's doubles title with Martina Hingis in 2016 and the Australian Open mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009.
- Earlier she said that her professional career started in Melbourne and she could not think of a better arena to finish her Grand Slam career.
